The controller has a storage area configured to store management information including probability management information denoting error probability information of a unit physical area in a nonvolatile storage medium, and an error correcting circuit configured to carry out coding and decoding by a low density parity check code. The controller, in a data read process, is configured to identify based on management information an error probability, uses the identified error probability to correct the read data using the error correcting circuit.

Provided is a computer system, in which a storage system includes a first control module for logically dividing first resources of the storage system and operating them as independent virtual storage systems. A computer includes a second control module for logically dividing second resources of the computer and operating them as independent virtual machines. The computer system holds first information indicating a correlation among the virtual machine, the virtual storage system, and the first resources. The first control module specifies the first resource allocated to the virtual storage system whose power is cut based on the first information, and powers off the specified first resource. Thus, system power consumption can be reduced by managing power of the storage system shared by a plurality of virtual machines in a virtualization environment.

A computer device has a first control block which logically partitions computing resources of the computer device and makes resulting partitions run as independent virtual computers. The storage system has a second control block which logically partitions storage resources of the storage system and makes resulting partitions run as independent virtual storage systems. The system also has a management unit incorporating: a first control table which controls computing resources of the computer device; a second control table which controls storage resources of the storage system; and a third control table which controls the relations between the virtual computers and the virtual storage systems. The first control block logically partitions the computing resources according to the first control table; and the second control block logically partitions the storage resources according to the second control table.

A storage system includes non-volatile medium that stores data; a disk cache that temporarily stores data to be stored in the non-volatile medium; a control unit that controls input and output of data to and from the non-volatile medium; and a memory unit that stores information used by the control unit. The control unit divides the disk cache into at least one of independent disk cache partitions. The memory unit stores the first information that describes states of respective memory areas in the disk cache, and the second information that indicates states of respective memory areas in the disk cache used by the divided disk cache partitions. The second information includes information that identifies the first information corresponding to the respective memory areas in the disk cache.

A storage system connected to a terminal, the computer system includes: a plurality of drive devices that respectively drive a plurality of physical disks each having a physical storage area; a RAID configuration unit that configures a plurality of RAID groups by grouping two or more of the plurality of physical disks; a logical disk creation unit that creates, for the terminal through the RAID group, a logical disk having a logical storage area associated with the physical storage area; a memory for storing a RAID group control table showing, for each the RAID group, (i) a free capacity that is the amount of physical storage area remaining in the RAID group to be able to be associated with the logical disk and (ii) a power status of the RAID group; a receiver that receives a request for creating a new logical disk; and an area allocation unit that allocates to the new logical disk the physical storage area remaining in the RAID group selected by giving priority to a RAID group in a powered state over a RAID group in a non-powered state with reference to the RAID group control table.

Reliability of data that is stored in a disk drive by a storage system is enhanced. An information apparatus has a processor, a memory, an interface control unit, and a system control unit, which controls communications between the processor, the memory, and the interface control unit. The system control unit judges whether to attach, to data that is transferred between the memory and the system control unit, an error detecting code for protecting the data based on an address in the memory at which the data to be transferred is read or written.

Method and information apparatus for improving data reliability

In a storage system directly connected to a network, if conventional interfaces and protocols are used when an I/O command issued from a file server is transmitted to the storage system, the command/data is serially transferred via a single transfer path so that the performance is lowered. Conventional interfaces do not provide the means to notify the storage system of the failure at the file server. The file server and a channel adapter of the storage system are mounted on the same board and connection paths therebetween are controlled so that a plurality of protocols can be operated independently. A path independent from a command/data path is provided between the file server and channel adapter, and the received failure information is stored in a shared memory of the storage system and used for the fail-over.
