A manganese dioxide-containing cathode comprising heat-treated manganese dioxide, a binder and a conductive agent and wherein the walls of the pores of the cathode are coated with a vapor deposited organic solvent thereby reducing its affinity for absorbing moisture when exposed to a moisture environment for a fixed time period. The invention also relates to a method for producing the organic solvent treated manganese dioxide-containing cathode.

Organic solvent-treated manganese dioxide-containing cathodes

A homogeneous mass of particulate manganese dioxide which has been heat-treated to reduce its moisture content and treated with an organic solvent which substantially fills the pores of the manganese dioxide thereby reducing its affinity for absorbing moisture when exposed to a moisture environment for a fixed time period. The invention also relates to a process for producing the manganese dioxide.

The disclosure of this application is directed to silver catalyzed manganese dioxide which is useful as a hydrogen gas absorber. The silver catalyzed manganese dioxide of this invention can be formed into a shaped article of desired configuration, inserted into an electrochemical cell such as a battery, which is subsequently sealed, to absorb hydrogen gas evolved within the cell. Absorption of hydrogen gas by the silver catalyzed manganese dioxide prevents excessive build-up of gas pressure within the sealed cell thus minimizing the possibility of rupture and complete failure of the cell.

A metal oxide alkaline cell, such as a silver oxide-zinc cell, having a negative electrode, an alkaline electrolyte, a positive electrode comprising for example divalent silver oxide housed in a positve terminal container, a separator disposed between the negative electrode and the positive electrode, and wherein a thin porous, electronically conductive layer, such as a gold layer, is disposed between the positive electrode and the separator and is extended to contact the positive terminal container.

Buildup of unreacted hydrogen gas in sealed electrochemical cells has been prevented by inserting a hydrogen absorbing device into the cell before sealing. This hydrogen absorbing device is preferably a discrete shaped body, e.g., cylindrical or ring shaped, encased in an electrolyte impermeable, but hydrogen gas permeable membrane and includes a material which will react chemically with hydrogen gas, a catalyst for the hydrogen consuming reaction, and a compatible binder which maintains the reactant and catalyst in the form of a discrete shaped body which is porous to hydrogen gas.
