Electrodeposition (ED) systems and methods are disclosed where acid control is possible without adding acid from outside when acid tends to be depleted. A mixture of high neutralizer removal type membrane electrodes and low neutralizer removal type membrane electrodes are placed in an ED tank. To each of these two types of electrodes separate and independent electrolyte circulation systems are connected. To each of these circulation system are connected each correspondingly first and second electrolyte conductivity control means, each of which works to add D.I. water, as a dilution media, to corresponding electrolyte circulation system, when the conductivity exceeds pre-set reference conductivity values. The reference conductivity set point at which value the second electrolyte control means will add D.I. water to the second electrolyte circulation system preferably is set higher than the reference conductivity set point at which value the first electrolyte control means will add D.I. water to the first electrolyte circulation system.

Electrodeposition painting systems and methods

An electrodeposition painting cell and method utilizing a membrane electrode cell and membrane monitoring capability is disclosed. In the disclosed cell and method, the article to be painted constitutes the first electrode, and a second electrode is provided by a membrane electrode cell. An electrical current detection device and an electrical potential sensing device provide inputs to a computing device, which computes membrane resistance or membrane voltage drop, with the results thereof utilized to assess membrane degradation. A novel voltage sensing probe and method of use thereof also is disclosed.

Electrodeposition painting device and method

An electrodeposition coating system widely used in an automatic coating process of a motor vehicle and the like. This system comprises: an article to be coated as being a first electrode, which is disposed in an electrodeposition bath; and at least two second electrodes provided in association with the article; and current is passed between the both sets of electrodes through an aqueous solution of a substance for forming a coating film contained in the bath to thereby electrodeposit the substance onto the article. The second electrodes consist of two groups of electrodes, the electrodes of a first group out of these second electrodes include electrode members constituted by corrosion-resisting members, each of these electrode members is integrally provided with a first membrane position therearound for precluding most of the flow of an ionized neutralizing agent contained in the aqueous solution, which is attracted by the electrode members, and the electrodes of a second group include electrode members which are each integrally provided with a second membrane portion therearound, for osmotically extracting the neutralizing agent.

Electrodeposition coating system

An electrodeposition coating system widely used for automatic coating process, etc. of motor vehicles. This system includes an article to be coated, which is a first electrode, and provided in an electrodeposition bath and a second electrode or electrodes constituted by one or more electrodes and provided in association with the article. In this system, current is passed between the both electrodes through an aqueous solution of a substance for forming a coating a film, which is contained in the electrodeposition bath, to thereby electrodeposit the substance for forming a coating material onto the article. The aqueous solution and the second electrodes or electrodes are separated from each other by a membrane portion having a first function of precluding the flow of ionized neutralizing agent in the aqueous solution attracted by the second electrode or electrodes and a second function of precluding the flow of ions flowing out of the side of the second electrode or electrodes attracted by the first electrode.

This invention relates to an electrodeposition coating system, wherein an article to be coated as being an electrode on one side and a plurality of membrane electrodes as being electrodes on the other side are provided in one and the same bath. Voltage supply to at least part of the membrane electrodes are made switchable or the voltage is made variable to a desirable value. Voltage regulation and the like to the membrane electrodes are possible in accordance with the shape of the article to be coated, so that a uniform coating surface can be formed on the article to be coated.

A membrane electrode device used as one electrode provided in association with an article to be coated such as a motor vehicle constituting the other electrode in electrodeposition coating widely used in automatic coating film treatment and the like of motor vehicle bodies. This device includes a tubular support membrane support member formed of mesh-like skeleton members, a membrane wound around the outer periphery of this membrane support member, and an electrode provided at the side of the inner surface of the membrane support member at a given interval therefrom. Part of portions of the skeleton members, which are provided in the vertical direction, are raised to some degree outwardly from the other skeleton portions.
