A vehicle wheel bearing forming a double row angular contact ball bearing of back-to-back duplex bearing type has an outer member formed, on its inner circumference, with outer raceway surfaces with each having a circular arc longitudinal section. A pair of inner rings are each formed, on its outer circumference, with an inner raceway surface having a circular arc longitudinal section arranged opposite to one of the outer raceway surfaces. The end of a smaller diameter side of one inner ring abuts against an end of a smaller diameter side of the other inner ring. Double row balls are contained between the outer and inner raceway surfaces, respectively, of the outer member and inner rings and are held by cages. Seals are mounted in annular openings formed between the outer member and inner rings. The outer member and the inner rings are made by plastically deforming pipe members, The outer and inner raceway surfaces, cylindrical portions of the outer member forming fitting portions of the seals and/or shoulder portions of the inner rings forming land portions are formed with predetermined dimensions and are ground for accuracy.

A wheel bearing apparatus incorporating a rotational speed detecting apparatus has an axially extending through bore formed in a mounting portion. A bottomed cylindrical sensor receptacle is integrally molded with the through bore. The sensor receptacle is press-formed from a non-magnetic steel sheet. The bottom portion of the sensor receptacle is arranged to oppose the pulser ring via a predetermined axial gap.

The constant velocity joint includes an outer joint member press-fitted to an inner periphery of the first inner member with torque transmission means formed therebetween that transmits torque by engagement of a plurality of axially extending teeth, wherein the torque transmitting teeth of the first inner member have a tooth profile that is controlled within a specified range over the entire axial length of the teeth.

Drive wheel bearing device

A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus has an outer member, an inner member and double row rolling elements freely rollably contained between the outer raceway surfaces and inner raceway surfaces, respectively, of the outer member and the inner member. Either one of the outer member or inner member, on its outer side end, is integrally formed with a wheel mounting flange to mount a wheel. A plurality of bolt apertures is formed in the wheel mounting flange. The wheel is secured on the wheel mounting flange by a plurality of bolts. Cut-out portions are formed between the bolt apertures. The cut-out portions avoid the vicinity of each bolt aperture. Each cut-out portion is formed with a circular arc configuration so that its deepest portion is positioned closely to a pitch circle diameter of the bolt apertures.

Wheel bearing apparatus for a vehicle

A bearing sealing device is provided between inner and outer members of a wheel support bearing assembly and includes an annular sealing plate of an L shaped section and an elastic sealing member having an elastic body secured to a core metal of a reverse L-shaped section. The sealing plate includes a cylindrical wall, mounted on an outer periphery of the inner member, and a radial wall extending upwardly from one end thereof. The core metal includes a cylindrical wall, mounted on an inner periphery of the outer member, and a radial upright wall extending radially inwardly from one end thereof. The elastic body includes two side sealing lips, arranged radially of the core metal and having their tips held in contact with the radial upright wall. The distance between those side sealing lips is chosen to be equal to or greater than 0.1 mm.

A wheel bearing apparatus incorporating a wheel speed detecting apparatus has an outer member and an inner member. A sensor holder with an embedded wheel speed detecting sensor is mounted on an inner side end of the outer member. A pulser ring has an encoder with circumferential characteristics that alternately and equidistantly change. A metal core is press formed from a steel plate and insert-molded into the sensor holder. A sealing member is integrally bonded to the metal core. A connector for electrically connecting the wheel speed detecting sensor to a harness, connected to an electronic circuit, is mounted at a predetermined position on the circumference of the sensor holder. The connector projects radially outward from the circumference at a predetermined inclined. A recess is formed in the connector. The recess is fit onto an inner side end of the outer member in a manner to cover the inner side end, via a predetermined interface.

Wheel bearing apparatus incorporated with a wheel speed detecting apparatus

A method for manufacturing a drive wheel bearing device is provided. During the manufacturing, a swaged portion is formed in a manner as a non-hardened region, and in a manner that variations based on a reference surface in the axial direction of the flat surface are restricted within +/&#x2212;0.2 mm. The reference surface is provided with an end face on an outboard side of a flange for an attachment of a wheel or an end face on an inboard side of the flange for attachment to a vehicle body. Part of the swaged portion making contact with an outer joint member of to drive wheel bearing device is formed into a flat surface. Serrations and a pilot part are formed on an inner periphery of a first inner member of the drive wheel bearing device. An inner peripheral surface of the pilot part is formed as a turned surface, and the turned surface has been turned after forming the swaged portion. A serrated shaft is formed on the outer joint member for transmitting torque to and from the first inner member through the serrations and an outer periphery surface opposing to the pilot part. A surface hardened layer is formed on the outer joint member by heat treatment in a region that includes at least the serrated shaft.

Method for manufacturing a drive wheel bearing device

A wheel bearing apparatus incorporating a wheel speed detecting apparatus has an outer member, an inner member, double row rolling elements, a sensor holder, and a pulser ring. The sensor holder cover has a cylindrical fitting portion press-fit onto the inner side end portion of the outer member. A flange portion extends radially inward from the fitting portion. The flange portion is in close contact with the end face of the outer member. A bottom portion extends further radially inward from the flange portion. The holding portion is integrally joined to the bottom portion. The flange portion is formed with a flat surface so that it forms an abutting width larger than 5 mm or more, against the end face of the outer member, or larger than 50% or more, relative to the flat width of the end face of the outer member.

A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus has a substantially cylindrical outer ring formed with double row outer raceway surfaces on its inner circumference and with press fitting surfaces on its outer circumferences of its cylindrical portions. A pair of inner rings is formed with inner raceway surfaces on their outer circumferences. The inner rings cylindrical portions have fitting surfaces on their inner circumferences. The fitting surfaces fit onto a cylindrical portion of a wheel hub. The inner rings are adapted to be arranged so that end faces of the cylindrical portions abut each other. Double row rolling elements are freely rollably arranged between outer and inner raceway surfaces. At least the outer ring of the outer and inner is formed by pressing or rolling from a plate member or a pipe member. The outer ring and the inner rings have cylindrical portions axially extending, respectively, from the outer raceway surfaces and the inner raceway surfaces. The thickness of the cylindrical portions of the outer ring is thinner than that of the outer raceway surfaces. Seals are arranged in annular spaces formed between the inner circumferences of the cylindrical portions of the outer ring and the outer circumferences of the cylindrical portions of the inner rings. The seals are adapted to be press-fit into the inner circumferences of the cylindrical portions of the outer ring. The double row outer raceway surfaces of the outer ring and the inner raceway surfaces of the inner ring are surface hardened.

A wheel bearing device includes a hub ring, a double-row bearing and a constant velocity universal joint which are unitized together. At least one of double-row inner raceways of the bearing and a wheel mounting flange are formed on a hub ring. The hub ring and a stem portion of a joint outer ring of the constant velocity universal joint are fitted through a torque transmission assembly, wherein a pilot member as a separate element having a wheel guide portion and a brake guide portion is fitted to a side-end portion of the wheel mounting flange of the hub ring, and the hub ring and the pilot member are fixed to the joint outer ring by swaging.
