The invention relates to a method of producing imide bond-containing resins. The method comprises reacting a halogenated phthalic anhydride, a specific copolymer and a diisocyanate compound in an inert solvent in the presence of a quaternary phosphonium compound as a catalyst to give an imide bond-containing resin in high yield. The imide bond-containing resins provide flammable substances with good fire or flame resistance and at the same time themselves have good heat resistance and weather resistance. Therefore, the resins can be used as flame retardants in a broad range of application.

This invention relates to novel oxyalkylated quaternary ammonium compounds, processes for their production and plant growth regulating compositions containing the same compounds. Each of these oxyalkylated quaternary ammonium compounds consists of an oxyalkylated quaternary ammonium cation and an anion selected from among carboxylic acid residues, aminosulfonic acid residues and phosphoric acid ester residues. Hexabromocyclododecane may be synthesized at a high yield in pure form by brominating 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene with bromine in a C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 saturated aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a boron trifluoride complex, neutralizing the reaction mixture with a non-aqueous base, and recovering the resulting crystals of hexabromocyclododecane.

Preparation of hexabromocyclododecane

A granular flame retardant additive is provided comprising from 70 to 99.5% by weight of an organohalide flame retardant and from 0.5 to 30% by weight of thermoplastic synthetic resin as a binder. The additive is easy to handle and resistant to disintegration during transportation and mixing with fabricating resin pellets. Uniform distribution thereof in fabricated thermoplastic articles is achieved by simply co-feeding the granules and the fabricating resin to a fabricating machine.

A water-soluble film or sheet made of a polyoxyalkylene compound having an average molecular weight of at least 50,000 produced by linking chains of a polyether having an average molecular weight of at least 3,000 and an oxyethylene unit content of at least 70% by weight with each other through ester linkages by reaction of the polyether and a polycarboxylic acid, its anhydride or its lower alkyl ester. The film or sheet is also soluble in organic solvents and has properties comparable or superior to known water-soluble polymer films or sheets.
