A balloon pumping method of inflating and deflating a balloon includes the steps of setting a pressure in the balloon at a first pressure value, which is higher than a minimum pressure value and is substantially equal to or lower than a maximum pressure value, when the balloon is shifted from a deflated condition to an inflated condition, and setting the pressure in the balloon at a second pressure value, which is substantially equal to or higher than the minimum pressure value and lower than the first pressure value, when the balloon is estimated to have completely inflated at the first pressure value.

A spark plug has a central electrode, an insulator surrounding the central electrode and a metallic shell retaining therein the insulator and provided with no thread thereon. The spark plug is clearance fitted in a plug hole of a cylinder head, without being screwed into the plug hole, in such a manner that a front end portion of the metallic shell is accommodated in a front end section of the plug hole with a clearance therebetween provided with a sealant so as to transmit heat from the spark plug to the cylinder head. The clearance is preferably given by the following expression: 0.005&lE;D&minus;d &lE;0.05, where D is an inner diameter (mm) of the front end section and d is an outer diameter (mm) of the front end portion. By this, the spark plug can be easily attached to the cylinder head and attain improved heat resistance.

An engraving method is switched from line engraving to dot engraving (or vice versa) at a boundary line at every horizontal scanning by generating and controlling switching signals by means of an engraving discrimination plate. An engraving is performed while a sweeping operation is being performed in a direction (X direction) substantially parallel to a long side of a portion of a card requiring engraving. Since the number of horizontal sweepings are reduced considerably in comparison with the conventional method, the time required for engraving can be shortened. Since the number of vibrations of the engraving table, which are the biggest obstacle for achieving light weight, is reduced in accordance with the reduction in the number of the above-described horizontal sweepings, the engraving table can be produced more light in weight. As a result, a higher speed of the movement of the engraving table can be achieved, thus making it possible to further shorten the time required for engraving.

An apparatus for engraving images has an engraving table driving apparatus for making a sliding table, on which table a card on which an image is to be engraved is fixedly mounted, reciprocate from side to side; and engraving machine for performing engraving on the card by making a cutter head, disposed oppositely facing the card on the sliding table, move vertically; a base, integrally mounted with the engraving machine, which reciprocates back and forth; a belt placed in such a manner as to be movable back and forth on the top surface of the base; and a lever, rotatably mounted in a vertical direction on the base, by means of which the belt is mounted in a fastened state in the end section of the base. The operation for feeding the card to the starting point and returning them can be accomplished rapidly, and therefore the time required to engrave the card can be shortened considerably.

Apparatus for engraving images

A pumping unit is disclosed which alternately applies a positive and a negative pressure, both of given values, to aa drive chamber of an artificial heart. In a first and a second embodiment, air of an elevated pressure which is discharged by an air compressor is fed through a positive pressure accumulator and a positive pressure open/close valve to the drive chamber, and a negative pressure from an air decompressor is fed through a negative pressure accumulator and the negative pressure open/close valve to the drive chamber. Alternating open periods are assigned to the positive and the negative pressure open/close valve. During the open period, each valve is opened and closed in a manner corresponding to the prevailing pressure in the drive chamber so as to maintain the pressure at a constant value. In a third embodiment, a positive pressure regulator valve is interposed between the air compressor and the positive pressure accumulator, and the positive pressure open/close valve is interposed between the positive pressure accumulator and the drive chamber while a negative pressure regulator valve is interposed between the air decompressor and the negative pressure accumulator, and the negative pressure open/close valve is interposed between the negative pressure accumulator and the drive chamber. The positive and the negative pressure open/close valves are opened in an alternate fashion. The positive pressure regulator valve is operated with a given duty cycle which depends on the prevailing pressure from the positive accumulator so that such pressure is maintained at a constant value. The negative pressure regulator valve is operated with a given duty cycle which depends on the prevailing pressure of the negative accumulator so that such pressure is maintained at a given value.

Pumping drive unit

Apparatus for driving a medical appliance has a single compressor for generating both the positive and negative pressures. The switching valves are connected to the outlet and inlet terminals of the compressor. The outlet and inlet terminals of the compressor are also connected to the positive pressure accumulator and the negative pressure accumulator, respectively. The apparatus has the pressure sensors to sense the pressures in the positive and negative pressure accumulators. When the pressure in the accumulator reaches a set pressure, at least one of the switching valves is closed. The apparatus further has the relief valves connected to the outlet and inlet terminals of the compressor. These relief valves open when the pressures of the compressor become excessive.

A retardation in the deflating motion of a balloon caused by a local collapse thereof is prevented. A tubular sleeve having a multiplicity of small apertures in the periphery therein is disposed for axial movement between the internal spaces of the balloon and a catheter. In use, the sleeve is inserted into the catheter to prevent a fluid channel from being blocked upon occurrence of a local collapse of the balloon. To facilitate positioning the sleeve, a projection is formed on an elongate stylet adjacent to its distal end to apply a braking action to the sleeve and secure it in place when the latter reaches a given position within the balloon.

A cannula has an electrode therein for detecting electrocardiographic signals. The electrode is located in the inner wall of the cannula and has anti-thrombus characteristics. The electrode comprises a composition of an anti-thrombus polyurethane powder and a carbon powder. This composition has electrically conductive and anti-thrombus characteristics. The electrode is located in a recess of the inner wall of the cannula. The electrode is connected to the outside through a wire conductor.

A pair of spaced electrodes are disposed inside the thoracic aorta near the heart and are used to sense R- and P-waves in an ECG signal. The electrodes are moved to an ideal intra-aortic position, which is that where R- and P-waves are sensed to have the same magnitude, the P-wave, which occurs earlier than the R-wave, serving as means for accurately predicting the occurrence of the R-wave. The electrodes are affixed to the distal end of an intra-aortic balloon, which is capable of being disposed at the ideal position by monitoring of the R- and P-waves sensed by the electrodes. The balloon is deflated at the occurrence of the R-wave, which has been correctly predicted by the earlier P-wave.

An intra-aortic balloon pump apparatus includes a first catheter one end of which is secured to a connector having a gas supply port, a balloon one end of which is secured to the distal end of the first catheter, a central tubular member the distal end of which projects from the distal end of the first catheter and to which the distal end of the balloon is fixedly secured, a second catheter freely insertable into the central tubular member and having a distal end provided with an arterial pressure transduceer, and a second connector to which the other end of the second catheter is secured for feeding a signal from the pressure transducer to the outside of the apparatus. After the balloon, central tubular member and first catheter are placed into the aorta, the second catheter having the pressure transducer at its distal end is inserted through the interior of the central tubular member into the aorta.
