A sensor element of a gas sensor includes a solid electrolyte body which has oxygen-ion conductivity, a measuring electrode that is exposed to a measured gas, a reference gas electrode that is exposed to a reference gas, and a porous protection layer. The measuring electrode is mounted on an outer surface of the solid electrolyte body. The reference electrode is mounted on an inner surface of the solid electrolyte body. The protection layer covers a surface of the measuring electrode. A plurality of open portions are formed to penetrate through the measuring electrode. A part of the protection layer is joined to the solid electrolyte body, via the plurality of open portions.

Gas sensor

A gas sensor includes: a sensor element including a bottomed tubular solid electrolyte, a detection electrode, and a reference electrode; and a heater for heating the solid electrolyte. The reference electrode includes an inner detection section on an entire periphery in a circumferential direction at an endmost position on a tip side on the reference electrode, an inner connecting section on an entire periphery in the circumferential direction at an endmost position on a base end side on the reference electrode, and an inner lead section on a part in the circumferential direction at a position where the inner detection section is connected to the inner connecting section. A formation region in the circumferential direction of the inner lead section is reduced stepwise from the inner detection section toward the inner connecting section.

In a gas sensor having a gas sensor element, a solid electrolyte body has a cylindrical cup shape, one end of which is closed to form a bottom part, and the other end of which is open. The solid electrolyte body has oxygen ion conductivity. A reference electrode is arranged on an interior surface of the solid electrolyte body. An atmosphere is in contact with the reference electrode. The measurement electrode is arranged on an exterior surface of the solid electrode body. Exhaust gas as a detection target is in contact with the measurement electrode. At least one of the measurement electrode and the reference electrode contains thallium particles, within a range of 0.1 ppm and not more than 150 ppm.
