A hard coating layer on a cutting tool includes at least a Ti and Al complex nitride or carbonitride layer and has an average layer thickness of 1 to 20 &#x3bc;m. In a case where a composition of the complex nitride or carbonitride layer is expressed by: (TiAl)(CN), a content ratio x and a content ratio y satisfy 0.60&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.95 and 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.005, where x and y are in atomic ratio. Crystal grains constituting the complex nitride or carbonitride layer include cubic phase crystal grains and hexagonal phase crystal grains. An area ratio occupied by the cubic phase crystal grains is 30-80%. An average grain width W is 0.05-1.0 &#x3bc;m. An average aspect ratio A of the crystal grains with the cubic grain structure is 5 or less. A periodic content ratio change of Ti and Al in (TiAl)(CN) exists in each of the cubic phase crystal grains.

Surface coated cutting tool

A surface-coated cutting tool includes a lower layer including a Ti compound layer, an intermediate layer including an &#x3b1;-AlOlayer, and an upper layer including a Zr-containing &#x3b1;-AlOlayer. The outermost layer of the lower layer contains 0.5 to 3 at % of oxygen. The frequencies of inclination angles between a normal line to a (0001) plane of AlOgrains of the intermediate layer and a normal line to a surface of a tool body have a highest peak in an inclination angle division of 0 to 10&#xb0;. The ratio of the frequencies is 50 to 70%. The frequencies between the normal line to the (0001) plane of AlOgrains of the entirety of the intermediate and the upper layers and the normal line to the tool body surface have a highest peak in an inclination angle division of 0 to 10&#xb0;. The ratio of the frequencies is 75% or more.

Surface-coated cutting tool

A surface-coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer exhibiting an excellent flaking and chipping resistance in a high-speed heavy and intermittent cutting is provided. The vapor-deposited hard coating layer has a lower layer (Ti compound layer) and an upper layer (&#x3b1;-type AlOlayer). Thirty to 70% of AlOcrystal grains directly above the lower layer are oriented to (11-20) plane. Forty-five % or more of all of the AlOcrystal grains are oriented to (0001) plane. Preferably, the outermost surface layer of the lower layer is an oxygen-containing TiCN layer having oxygen content of 0.5 to 3 atomic % only within the depth region of 500 nm. The ratio of the number of AlOcrystal grains directly above the outermost surface layer to the number of crystal grains of the Ti carbonitride layer in the outermost surface layer is 0.01 to 0.5 in the interface.

A surface-coated cutting tool includes a body and a hard coating layer coating the cutting tool body. In the surface-coated cutting tool, the (TiAl)(CN) layer with a cubic crystal structure (X and Y are atomic ratio, and satisfy 0.60&#x2266;X&#x2266;0.90 and 0.0005&#x2266;Y&#x2266;0.005, respectively) is vapor-deposited on the body by a chemical vapor deposition method. The Al content Xis 0.55&#x2266;X&#x2266;0.70, and the grain size Dis 0.1 &#x3bc;m or less in the (TiAl)(CN) layer near the interface between the body and the complex carbonitride layer. The Al content X0.80&#x2266;X&#x2266;0.95 and the average grain size Dis 0.5 &#x3bc;m to 2 &#x3bc;m in the (TiAl)(CN) layer near the outer surface side. Furthermore, the Al content ratio and the grain size in the (TiAl)(CN) layer gradually increase to the outer surface side.

Surface-coated cutting tool having therein hard coating layer capable of exhibiting excellent chipping resistance during high-speed intermittent cutting work

A coated tool with a hard coating layer, which has an excellent hardness and heat insulating effect; and exhibits an excellent chipping resistance and an excellent fracturing resistance for a long-term usage, is provided. The hard coating layer included in the coated tool has a chemically vapor deposited alternate laminated structure, which is made of: a region A layer and a region B layer, each of which is expressed by the composition formula of (TiAl)(CN); and has the average total layer thickness of 1-10 &#x3bc;m. In the region A layer, relationships, 0.70&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.80 and 0.0005&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.005, are satisfied; the average grain width W is 0.1 &#x3bc;m or less; and the average grain length L is 0.1 &#x3bc;m or less. In the region B layer, relationships, 0.85&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.95 and 0.0005&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.005, are satisfied; the average grain width W is 0.1-2.0 &#x3bc;m; and the average grain length L is 0.5-5.0 &#x3bc;m.

A surface-coated cutting tool, which has a hard-coating layer with excellent chipping and fracturing resistances in a high speed intermittent cutting work, is provided. The surface-coated cutting tool includes a cutting tool body, which is made of WC cemented carbide or TiCN-based cermet, and a hard-coating layer, which is vapor deposited on the cutting tool body and has a lower layer and an upper layer. The lower layer is a Ti compound layer, and the upper layer is an aluminum oxide layer. There is a micropore-rich layer in the lower layer in the vicinity of the interface between the lower and upper layers. There are micropores with diameters of 2 to 70 nm in the micropore-rich layer. The diameters of the micropores in the micropore-rich layer shows a bimodal distribution pattern.

Surface-coated cutting tool having hard-coating layer with excellent chipping resistance and fracturing resistance

A method of manufacturing a surface-coated cutting tool includes: forming an aluminum oxide layer having a layer thickness of 0.05 to 5 &#x3bc;m and an &#x3b1;-alumina structure with a corundum type crystal structure on a cutting tool body using a sol-gel method. The step of forming includes adding an alcohol to aluminum alkoxide; adding an acid; stirring the mixture at 10&#xb0; C. or lower to form a sol; applying the sol on a surface of the cutting tool body or an outer-most surface of a hard-coating layer formed on the surface of the cutting tool body; performing a drying process at least once, the applied sol being dried at 100 to 400&#xb0; C. in the drying process; and annealing the cutting tool body with a dried sol layer at 500 to 1000&#xb0; C.

Method of manufacturing surface-coated cutting tool with excellent abrasion resistance

A surface-coated cutting tool includes a tool substrate made of tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide or titanium carbonitride-based cermet; and a hard coating layer formed by vapor-depositing in order, a lower layer (a), an intermediate layer (b), and an upper layer (c) on the tool substrate. The lower layer (a) is a Ti layer composed of one or more of a titanium carbide layer, a titanium nitride layer, a titanium carbonitride layer, a titanium carboxide layer, and a titanium oxycarbonitride layer, and having a thickness of 3 to 20 &#x3bc;m. The intermediate layer (b) is an aluminum oxide layer having a thickness of 1 to 5 &#x3bc;m, and having an &#x3b1;-type crystal structure in a chemically vapor-deposited state. The upper layer (c) is an aluminum oxide layer having a thickness of 2 to 15 &#x3bc;m, and containing one or more elements of Ti, Y, Zr, Cr, and B.

Provided is a surface coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer exhibits excellent chipping resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting processes. In the surface coated cutting tool having the hard coating layer including a lower layer (Ti compound layer) and an upper layer (AlOlayer) formed by vapor-deposition on the surface of the cutting tool body constituted by a WC-based cemented carbide or TiCN-based cermet, the ratio b/a of the number a of crystal grains in the Ti compound layer present in the interface to which the lower layer and the upper layer are adjacent to the number b of crystal grains in the AlOlayer is 4&#x2266;b/a&#x2266;20, and, furthermore, the average grain diameter of crystal grains in the Ti compound layer immediately below the AlOlayer is 0.5 &#x3bc;m or less.

Surface coated cutting tool with excellent chipping resistance

A surface coated cermet cutting tool comprising a tool body and a hard coating layer formed on the surface of the tool body, wherein the hard coating layer has a lower layer of a titanium compound layer and an upper layer of property-modified &#x3b1; type AlOlayer that has a crystal grain boundary orientation determined using a field emission type scanning electron microscope and an electron back-scattered diffraction pattern imaging device such that crystal grain boundary units of not less than 45% of all the grain boundaries show intersection angles of 15&#xb0; or less between normals of (0001) planes and between normals of {10-10} planes, where a crystal grain boundary unit is a crystal grain boundary of adjacent pair of crystal grains.

A surface-coated cutting tool comprising: a hard substrate; a lower layer which is formed on a surface of the hard substrate, contains a composite compound consisting of at least one element selected from Ti and Al, and at least one element selected from N and C, and has an average thickness of 0.1 to 3 &#x3bc;m; and an upper layer having an average thickness of 1 to 13 &#x3bc;m, which is formed on the lower layer and having a texture in which fine grains of crystalline Ti (C,N) based compounds or fine grains of crystalline (Ti, Al)(C, N) based compounds are dispersively distributed in a matrix of a carbon based amorphous material containing W.

Surface-coated cutting tool made of hard metal and manufacturing method for same

In a surface-coated cutting tool, (a) a Ti compound layer as a lower layer and (b) an &#x3b1;-type AlOlayer as an upper layer having a crystal grain structure of an even polygonal shape (including an even hexagonal shape) and an elongate shape and containing Zr are deposited on the surface of a tool substrate. In the surface-coated cutting tool, the above mentioned crystal grains of which insides are divided by at least one crystal lattice interface with the constituent atom covalent lattice point type expressed by &#x3a3;3 occupying 60% or more as an area ratio in the crystal grains of the upper layer.

Surface-coated cutting tool with hard coating layer having excellent abrasion resistance

A surface-coated cermet cutting tool is formed by depositing on a surface of a tool substrate a hard-coating layer composed of the following layers (a) and (b): (a) the lower layer is composed of one or more layers of TiC, TiN, TiCN, TiCO, and TiCNO and has a total average layer thickness in the range of 3 to 20 &#x3bc;m, and (b) the upper layer is an aluminum oxide layer having an &#x3b1;-type crystal structure when chemically deposited and has an average layer thickness in the range of 1 to 15 &#x3bc;m. In the case of the upper layer, the reformed &#x3b1;-AlOlayer shows distribution graphs of covalent lattice points of constituent atoms, which shows distribution ratios of individual &#x3a3;N+1 to total &#x3a3;N+1, having the highest peak at &#x3a3;3 and showing the distribution ratios of &#x3a3;3 to total &#x3a3;N+1 in the range of 60 to 80%.

Surface-coated cermet cutting tool with hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting

A surface-coated cermet cutting tool with a hard coating layer in a high-speed intermittent cutting work is provided. The hard-coating layer includes lower and upper layers. One of the lower layers is a titanium carbonitride layer, which has the highest peak in &#x3a3;3 and a distribution ratio of the &#x3a3;3 to &#x3a3;N+1 ranges 60% to 80% in the atom sharing lattice point distribution graph.

Surface-coated cermet cutting tool with hard coating layer having excellent chipping resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting work

A surface-coated cermet cutting tool with a hard coating layer is provided. The surface-coated cermet cutting tool is formed by coating, on a surface of a tool substrate, the hard-coating layer which includes an upper layer and a lower layer. The lower layer contains titanium compound layers and the upper layer contains an AlOlayer. One layer of the titanium compound layers in the lower layer includes a TiCN layer which has an average layer thickness of 2.5 to 15 &#x3bc;m and indicates a tilt-angle frequency distribution graph in which the highest peak exists in a tilt angle section ranging 0 to 10&#xb0; and the total sum of frequencies existing in the range of 0 to 10&#xb0; occupies a ratio of 45% or more of the total frequencies in the tilt-angle frequency distribution graph.
