There is provided a paper sheet handling apparatus capable of processing a deviated banknote in a banknote storage bin so as to displace the banknote to an optional position. The banknote handling apparatus incorporates a deviation processing means making contact with at least one side of a banknote in a paper sheet storage bin in which banknotes are stacked one upon another, for applying a force to the banknote at least in a direction of deviation of the banknote. The deviation processing means falls, during operation thereof, either in a condition in which it makes contact with a paper sheet in the paper sheet storage bin or in a condition in which it does not make contact therewith.

A recycle box to be mounted on a bill receiving/dispensing machine including a bill convey path, includes a stacking/separating mechanism arranged to receive bills from the bill convey path so that the bills are contained in the recycle box, and to separate at least one of the bills from the bills contained in the recycle box so that the at least one of the bills is fed to the bill convey path from the recycle box, and a swingable bill guide arranged in the vicinity of the stacking/separating mechanism.

A bill receiving/paying device and an automated cash transaction apparatus, by which bills of different sizes are dealt and by which charging and recovery can be made together, are provided. A charging/recovery box capable of storing and discharging the bills of different sizes in an intermixed state are provided in the bill receiving/paying device to solve the problems involved in the prior art. The technique of the present invention effectively prevents banknotes from being stored in an inadequate state in a cabinet of a cash recycling-type bill handing machine. In the bill handling machine, it is determined whether or not the conveyance state of each banknote is within an allowable range Wst fit for storage in a recycle cabinet, and unfit banknotes are conveyed to a non-recycle cabinet. The determination is based on a deviation Ost of each banknote in conveying position. This arrangement desirably prevents storage of banknotes in the recycle cabinet in an inadequate state and stabilizes operations of the bill handling machine.
