There is provided a filter element for the removal of particulates from an exhausted gas by collecting the particulates entrained with the gas characterized in that the filter element includes continuous alumina-silica fibers as inorganic fibers each of which contains not less than 98% by weight of alumina and silica and of which folding strength is not less than about 1.5 Kg/mm.sup.2.

The thickness of a fiber-reinforced resin sheet having uniformly distributed and substantially unidirectional fibers is reduced by stretching a fiber-reinforced resin sheet starting material in intimate contact with a thermoplastic sheet having a tensile strength larger than the fiber-reinforced resin sheet. This is accomplished by heating the fiber-reinforced resin sheet at a temperature at which the resin in the fiber-reinforced resin becomes sticky and subjecting the sheets to a uniform compressive force to adhere the fiber-reinforced sheet to the thermoplastic resin sheet and then simultaneously stretching the thus-adhered sheets to form a thin fiber-reinforced sheet in which the direction of stretching is perpendicular to the direction of the fibers.

A thermosettable epoxy resin composition comprising 100 parts by weight of an epoxy resin, 5 to 40 parts by weight of polysulfone resin having both a resorcinol moiety and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone moiety in the molecular chain, and an effective amount of a curing agent, which gives a cured product excellent in toughness as well as in curability, adhesion, mechanical strength at high temperatures and resistance to chemicals.

Epoxy resin composition

The present invention relates to a process for the continuous production of prepreg sheets unidirectionally arranged in parallel which involves contacting a plurality of fiber bundles arranged unidirectionally in parallel with each other with a solvent and continuously taking up the individual fiber bundle units under tension over curved surfaces of spreader bodies, such as cylinders while in a wet state, thereby spreading out said fiber bundles over the curved surfaces by means of said tension and subsequently drying the thus-spread out fibers. The invention also contemplates impregnating the dried fiber bundles with a specified quantity of molten resin to prepare the final prepreg resin-containing sheets. According to applicants' method, the fiber bundles are spread with a solvent prior to being impregnated with a resin and this method greatly decreases the frictional resistance between the fiber bundles and the curved surfaces making it possible for the fiber bundles to be spread out by only using a slight tension.

Process for continuous production of prepreg sheets

Phenols such as phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol, xylenols, ethylphenol, propylphenol, and butylphenol are selectively methylated in ortho-position with methanol in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature, for example, 300.degree. to 500.degree.C, under a pressure of 0.5 to 20 atmospheres absolute at a space velocity of 100 to 2000 hr.sup..sup.-1 in the presence of a three-component catalyst consisting of cerium oxide, magnesium oxide and germanium oxide, or a four-component catalyst consisting of cerium oxide, magnesium oxide, germanium oxide and tin oxide.
