A multi-layer coating film-forming method which comprises coating a cationic electrodeposition coating composition (A) containing a blocked polyisocyanate compound as a crosslinking agent and bismuth hydroxide to form a non-cured electrodeposition coating film, coating a water based intercoat coating composition (B ) containing a hydroxyl group and carboxyl group-containing base resin, a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, a fine aluminum powder and a titanium oxide white pigment onto the non-cured electrodeposition coating film to form a non-cured intercoat coating film, followed by heat curing both coating films simultaneously.

In a coating film formation method in which the thermosetting water-borne color paint (A) is coated on the surface of the substrate, then a thermosetting water-borne paint containing color pigment and/or glittering pigment (B) is coated on said coated surface, and, after predrying as necessary, a thermosetting clear paint (C) is coated and after that said 3-layer coating films of (A), (B) and (C) are simultaneously cured by heating, the solid content of the wet coat is controlled by an air jet step in which the air, whose temperature and/or humidity are controlled, is jetted from behind the paint nozzle in approximately the same direction as the atomized particles of said thermosetting water color paint (A) move to the surface of the substrate, when said paint is coated, around the spray pattern so that the air touches said pattern.

The present invention provides a method for forming a topcoat which comprises applying an aqueous colored base coating composition comprising a hydroxyl- and carboxyl-containing acrylic resin, a melamine resin, an alicyclic epoxy-containing compound, a neutralizing agent, and a coloring pigment to a substrate and applying to the base coat an organic solvent type clear coating composition to be cured by the crosslinking reaction between a carboxyl group and an epoxy group.

This invention provides a process to form a coated film characterized in that, after a cationically electrodeposition paint is applied on a metal-made article to be coated and is heat-cured, the surface of the resulting electrodeposition coated film is coated with an aqueous primer, which is mainly composed of such a thermoplastic polyurethane resin as is produced by subjecting a carboxyl group-containing urethane prepolymer to chain extension in the presence of an aqueous medium, and, successively, with an aqueous base paint, and, next, with a clear paint, and that the resulting three-layer coated films are heated and are thereby cured simultaneously. By this process, there can be formed a multi-layer coated film excellent in chipping-resistance, corrosion-resistance, weatherability and physical performances.

A method for forming a coating film by sequentially forming a pigmented base coat and a clear top coat on a substrate. The pigmented base coat composition includes (1) an OH-containing resin, (2) an amino resin, (3) a polyorganosiloxane resin a number average molecule weight of at least 1,000 and having at least two groups per molecule selected from a silanol group and an alkoxysilane group and (4) a flaky metal or a mica powder in (5) an organic solvent.
