A deep-grooving chip-forming cutting insert includes a rear mounting portion, a front cutting portion, and a pair of side walls, each side wall extending along the front and rear portions. The front cutting portion includes a front end surface, a top surface, and a cutting edge disposed at a transition between the front end surface and the top surface and extending from one side wall to the other to define a cutting width. The cutting edge includes a main portion, a pair of convexly curved first corner portions disposed at respective ends of the main portion, and a pair of convexly curved second corner portions offset rearwardly and outwardly with respect to respective first corner portions, wherein a step is formed between each first corner portion and its respective second corner portion. The main portion has a length as viewed in a direction perpendicular to the top surface, and which is at least 80% of the cutting width.

Deep-grooving insert having stepped cutting edge

A tool assembly includes a support body, a clamping device, and a tool holder clamped in a groove of the support body. A stopper block is disposed in the groove and abuts against the tool holder for positioning the tool holder along an axis. The stopper block is held in place by a wedge-type stopper clamp which applies a clamping force to the stopper block in a direction transversely of the axis. A wedge-type holder clamp is provided for applying a clamping force to the tool holder in a direction transversely of the axis. The stopper clamp is secured to the support body by a single fastening bolt, and the holder clamp is attached to the support body by a single fastening bolt. Each of the fastening bolts is provided with a part that forcefully pushes the respective clamp away from the support body in response to loosening of the fastening bolt. The arrangement is such that the tool holder can be inserted and removed without completely removing the holder clamp or its fastening bolt.

Clamping device for tool holder

A tool holder is held in a support body by a clamp which is wedged between the support body and the tool holder. The clamp is secured in the support body by a threaded fastener that extends through a through-hole formed in the clamp. The fastener carries a flange which pulls the clamp out of wedging relationship when the fastener is unscrewed. A spring disposed in the through-hole functions to keep the clamp pressed against the tool holder even after the clamp has been loosened, in order to keep the tool holder from falling out of the support body. A stopper is disposed behind the tool holder to locate the tool holder in a desired cutting position and to keep the tool holder pressed against an abutment surface of the support body.

Cutting inserts are assembled around the periphery of a holder of a tool by respective fastening screws. Each insert is seated against a support surface, and its respective fastening screw passes through a center hole in the insert and is threaded into a mounting hole formed in the support surface. The mounting hole is oriented non-perpendicularly to the support surface, whereby the fastening screw forms an angle with the axis of the insert's through-hole and is more accessible to a screwdriver. The through-hole has a conical or spherical portion which supports a spherical head of the fastening screw.

Cutter body with cutting inserts and methods for assembling same

A parting/grooving insert formed of cemented carbide includes upper and lower surfaces of V-shaped cross-section adapted to mate with corresponding V-shaped walls of a holder. The walls form opposite sides of a slot in which the insert is frictionally held. One of the walls is formed on an elastically movable clamping arm of the holder which is elastically displaced away from the other wall when the insert is forced into the slot. Due to the elasticity of the clamping arm, the insert is frictionally secured. The upper and lower walls include recesses spaced apart by non-recessed portions of the respective surfaces of the insert which are engaged by the walls of the slot. Due to the presence of the recesses, the pressure acting on the non-recessed portions of the insert surfaces is increased.
