In a sewing machine provided with a needle position adjusting device to position a needle relative to a basic line, a switching arrangement is provided to switch the needle position adjusting means from a needle amplitude adjusting mode to a mode of adjusting the needle basic line, whereby one adjusting device may be used as a needle amplitude adjusting device for ordinary stitching patterns and as a needle basic line-adjusting device for specific stitching patterns.

In a sewing machine which stores stitch control signals in an electronic memory composed with a microcomputer, incorporated therein are a stitch selecting device, a blindstitching depth setting device and a blindstitching width setting device which are both independently set by operation of said stitch selecting device. When a blindstitching pattern is selected, said depth setting device and width setting device are made operative, and needle dropping left positions are set by said depth setting device, and right dropping positions or whole amplitudes are set by said width setting device, and they are input to the memory for forming the blindstitching patterns by the stitching control signal of the blindstitching pattern.

In a sewing machine having two mechanisms different in sewing functions installed within one machine frame a single drive motor is provided and functions are alternately actuated by means of a clutch mechanism. Transmission of a driving force is made by keys and corresponding key grooves, and a selection mechanism has a switch-checking device for avoiding an erroneous operation. A release device of the switch-checking device is actuated by operation of the flywheel, to avoid dangers of erroneous switching during operation.

In a zigzag sewing machine a first group of pattern cams is rotated with a predetermined speed relative to a second pattern cam group by the arrangement of a transmission means between the first and second groups. A biasing means normally biases a cam follower to engage a selected pattern cam in said first and second groups. Cam selecting means operate to disengage the cam follower by way of the bias means and slidingly move the follower to a selected position along the cam groups.

When a sewing machine is stopped, it is electrically indicated whether a needle is positioned at a range where the thread passing is available so that intermittent indication during stitching operation is not made. The sewing machine is provided with a device including a neon lamp and a light interrupting member. The sewing machine has on its exposed front surface lighting indicators which are illuminated by the light of the neon lamp if this light is transmitted by the interrupting member which is mounted on or in the vicinity of the movable device for vertical movement of the needle so that the indicators indicate in the inoperative position of the sewing machine that the thread may be passed in a thread passing device.

A presser foot used in combination with a zigzag sewing machine, which is especially adapted to produce a combination stitch comprising a first half series of stitches and a second half series of stitches formed in the normal feeding direction. The presser foot is provided on the bottom at one side thereof with a recess in the feeding direction for preventing the precedingly formed first half series of stitches from contacting the bottom of the presser foot while the second half series of stitches are being formed.

A detachable and slideable fabric guide is used in combination with a sewing machine and adapted to bridge a sewing machine bed of a certain width, the fabric guide comprising an elongated main body made of an elastic material with sides which comprise vertical opposite faces, at least one of which is used to contact a fabric edge during stitching operation. The opposite ends of the main body are respectively curved down to integrally form hook portions which are, terminated with opposite abutments or grips each extending laterally of the main body. The opposite abutments normally define therebetween a predetermined distance a little smaller than the width of the sewing machine bed, which distance may be enlarged due to an outward flexing of the hook portions. One of the vertical faces of the main body is provided with a pair of walls protruding laterally therefrom to define therebetween a groove extending the substantial length of the elongated body.

Snap fit workpiece edge guide for a sewing machine

In a sewing machine, a stop-motion mechanism is provided for selectively performing stitching operation and thread winding operation. The stop-motion mechanism has a pulley secured to one end of a main drive shaft, which is driven by an electric motor, and a transmission disc for transmitting rotation of the pulley to a loop taker. To the pulley is detachably connected an operating member having a pair of engaging pins adapted to extend through the pulley. The operating member is rotated together with the pulley but axially displaceable with respect to the pulley between two positions, one position being close to the pulley in which engagement between the engaging pins and the transmission disc is established so that rotation of the pulley is transmitted to the transmission disc for ordinary stitching operation, and the other position being away from the pulley in which the engaging pins are disengaged from the transmission disc so that the transmission disc is stationary while the pulley is rotated for thread winding operation.

For a hem stitching operation with a sewing machine having a needle vertically reciprocating and also laterally swingable, a hem stitching presser foot is detachably mounted to a lower end of a presser bar of the sewing machine. The presser foot includes a brush like element which confronts a needle dropping hole formed in a sole of the presser foot, a frictional contact between the needle and the brush like element is produced when the needle passes the outside of the fabric edge, without penetrating the fabric, to stitch a portion of hem stitches on the outside of the fabric edge. The brush like element may be secured to the sole of the presser foot, or alternatively to a fabric guide member for engaging and guiding the fabric edge. The brush may be projected in the fabric feeding direction or across the fabric feeding direction. A pin may be located just beneath the brush like element for constant placement thereof.

A selecting device for a double-function sewing machine having a single drive motor with the sewing machine including a first stitch forming mechanism to produce one type of stitch, a second stitch forming mechanism to produce another type of stitch, and a transmission for transmitting the rotation of the drive motor to the first and second stitch forming mechanism. The selecting device includes a first clutch operated into an operative position to contact the first stitch forming mechanism to a transmission and operated into an inoperative position to disconnect that mechanism from the transmission, and a second clutch operated into an operative position to connect the second stitch forming mechanism to the transmission and operated into an inoperative position to disconnect that mechanism from the transmission. A manually operated dial is mounted on the housing of the sewing machine, which is connected to a lever mechanism operated in one direction to hold the first mentioned clutch in the inoperative position and release the second clutch into the operative position. The lever mechanism is manually operated in another direction to hold the second clutch in the inoperative position and release the first clutch into the operative position.

A sewing machine includes a main drive shaft rotatably mounted in said housing for vertically reciprocating a needle penetrating a fabric to produce stitches therein, a shaft extending transverse to the main drive shaft and rotatably mounted in the machine housing, a worm and a worm gear between said main drive shaft and the transverse shaft for rotating the latter at a speed smaller than the rotational speed of the main shaft, a plurality of pattern cams and a plurality of feed control cams mounted on the transverse shaft for rotation therewith. The sewing machine is further provided with a transmission arrangement operatively connected to a needle arrangement frame and having a first follower adapted to cooperate with a selected one of the plurality of pattern cams for controlling lateral swinging movement of the needle, a fabric feed regulator tiltably mounted in the machine housing for regulating the amount of movement of the fabric to be stitched in forward and rearward direction, and the transmission device for controlling tilting of the feed regulator including a second follower cooperating with a selected one of the feed control cams. A control shaft with a pattern selecting cam and a feed selecting cam is mounted in the machine housing, which is operative for moving the first follower into cooperative engagement with a selected one of said pattern cams and for moving the second follower into cooperative engagement with a selected one of the feed control cams.

The presser foot for a sewing machine is provided with a pair of aligned rollers arranged near the needle dropping hole. The lower end portion of the presser foot holder is connected to the presser foot between the pair of aligned rollers, so that a sufficient downwardly pressing force may be applied on the sewn materials even in the region near the needle dropping hole.
