A puffer type gas-blast circuit breaker provided with a movable electrode and a fixed electrode opposite the movable electrode, which electrodes are separable for implementing a circuit-breaking action, and a fixed current-carrying contact arranged around the periphery of the fixed electrode. The movable electrode is equipped with a surrounding insulating nozzle having a tapered inside surface. Movement of the movable electrode during separation of the electrodes compresses the gas in a puffer chamber and so blows out the resulting arc between the movable and fixed electrodes. The circuit breaker further includes a cylindrical insulator or capacitor that surrounds the arc extinction chamber formed by the electrodes and the insulating nozzle between the movable and fixed electrodes. In the circuit-breaking action, the line of extension of the tapered inside surface of the insulating nozzle downstream, as regards the gas flow, from the throat portion of the insulating nozzle, and extending in the direction of the fixed contact, lies within the innermost portion of the extreme end portion of the fixed current-carrying contact, on the side of the fixed contact nearest the movable electrode.

Puffer type gas-blast circuit breaker

A puffer type gas circuit breaker comprises a stationary piston, a movable puffer cylinder into which the stationary piston is inserted, a ring-shaped movable arcing contact provided at the forward end of the movable puffer cylinder, a rod-shaped stationary arcing contact disposed concentrically with the ring-shaped movable arcing contact, and a nozzle which blows compressed arc-extinguishing gas filled in the movable puffer cylinder on to arcs produced between both arcing contacts when the operation of the circuit breaker is actuated thereby puffing out said arcs, wherein an arc-resisting section prepared from arc-resisting metal is mounted on those portions of both arcing contacts which are exposed to arcs, the arcs touches the arc-resisting portions alone, thereby preventing both arcing contacts from being damaged by arcs. No arcs arises between both arcing contacts before the shutoff of current; restriking does not appear between the arcing contacts after the shutoff of current; and current can be shut off under a stable condition.

Puffer type gas circuit

In a method of and apparatus for synthetic testing of a multi-break circuit breaker having a metallic tank and a series connection of interrupter units, and a non-grounded and a grounded lead conductors connected to the first and the second ends of the series connection, a short-circuit current is made to flow through the series connection, the circuit breaker is then operated, and upon completion of the interruption of the current, a first transient recovery voltage is supplied to the non-grounded lead conductor and is applied, in effect, across a first one of the interrupter units at the second end or across a train of interrupter units including said first one of the interrupter unit, and, simultaneously, a second transient recovery voltage is supplied to the tank, the first and the second transient recovery voltages having the same polarity and the second transient recovery voltage having substantially the same magnitude as the whole transient recovery voltage to be applied across all the interrupter units of the circuit breaker.
