A disc drive device includes a base, a rotary member rotatably supported on the base and a first chucking mechanism for holding a first kind of disc-shaped recording medium while coinciding a rotational center of the first kind of recording medium with a rotational center of the rotary member. The first chucking mechanism is arranged at one end of the rotary member. A second chucking mechanism holds a second kind of disc-shaped recording medium different from the first kind of recording medium with respect to size or disc formatting while coinciding a rotational center of the second kind of recording medium with a rotational center of the rotary member. The second chucking mechanism is arranged at the other end of the rotary member. A driving mechanism is mounted on the base for driving the rotary member.

A disk drive for recording data on and/or reproducing data from a disk including a base provided with a top opening and a front opening, a cassette guide member housed in the base, the cassette guide member being supported so as to be freely movable upward and downward between an upper position, where the disk is to be installed on or removed from the disk driver, and a lower position, where the disk is to be loaded at a predetermined loading position, a head unit housed in the base and having a head for recording data on and/or reproducing data from the disk, and a head arm having first and second end portions, the first end portion supporting the head, a carriage supporting the second end portion of the head arm on one end thereof, a lifting mechanism provided on the cassette guide member for elevating and lowering the head arm, the lifting mechanism comprising an upper surface of the cassette guide member, and a resilient member connected on one end thereof to the head arm and on another to the carriage, the head being movable upward and downward relative to the carriage. A disc unit includes a control circuit board engaged with a base body of the disc unit, and a shield cover for noise shielding. The shield cover is also used for preventing the separation of mounting tabs extending from the circuit board and the base body by pressing them to hold the circuit board on the base body. Furthermore the shield cover is used as reinforcement for preventing the base body from distorting. With such a structure, the control circuit board is held on the base body by pressure of the shield cover so that multiple fixing members such as screws for fixing the control circuit board can be omitted. Further, since the base body is reinforced by the shield cover, the prevention of distortion of the base body is performed without increasing the thickness of the unit. The disc unit also includes a direct drive motor having a rotor yoke which receives the disc, which rotates a spindle shaft that engages the central opening of the disc. The rotor yoke is integrally provided with a chucking mechanism for the disc.

A disk drive apparatus according to this invention is arranged to record or reproduce information on or from a disk, which serves as a recording medium, by moving a head thereon in a predetermined direction while rotating the disk. The disk drive apparatus includes, in one preferred form, an operating member turnably supported on a base, and a holder for holding the disk within the disk drive apparatus in such a manner as to cause the disk to selectively move to a first location where the disk can be inserted or ejected and to a second location where information can be recorded or reproduced on or from the disk. The holder is arranged to move with the insertion of the disk in an inserting direction of the disk, while the operating member turns in a predetermined direction in association with the holder moving in the inserting direction of the disk. When the holder turns through a predetermined angle, the holder reaches the second location.

A disc driving unit is arranged so that a spindle for rotating a disc member, a pulley coupled to the spindle to transmit a rotational force to the spindle, and an inner or outer ring of a bearing to support the spindle rotatably are formed integrally. This arrangement greatly reduces a number of components in the unit so that the assembly process can be greatly simplified. Moreover, the error during assembly can be kept small. Furthermore, the bearing is disposed inside the rotating plane of the spindle, so that the rotational accuracy and planarity of the spindle are improved, and the overall height of the unit can be minimized.

A clamp operating member which is bendable cooperates with a spindle to support a clamping member which cooperates to clamp a disc-shaped recording medium and to position the clamping member in a clamped position and an unclamped position. The arrangement has a restraining member engaging with the clamp operating member to bend the clamp operating member when the clamp operating member is in a position to position the clamping member in an unclamped position. The clamp operating member is bent by the restraining member when in the unclamped condition to reduce an operating space occupied by the clamp operating member.

Recording medium clamping apparatus

A pinch-holder for magnetic disc is provided in which a pinch member for holding a magnetic disc is brought into contact with the magnetic disc through at least two steps so that any damage on the magnetic disc can be prevented. Further, the magnetic heads provided as the pinch member is never subjected to strong impact force thereby preventing the magnetic heads from deteriorating or being damaged by such strong impact force and further reducing the noise generated by the solenoid used for driving the pinch member.
