A bill processing machine according to the present invention includes an element array portion and a light guiding member. The element array portion is arranged so as to face one side of a conveyance path of a bill, and includes a light receiving element group, a light emitting element and an other side light receiving element. The light receiving element group includes a plurality of light receiving elements, and an arrangement direction of the light receiving elements is perpendicular to a conveyance direction of a bill. The light emitting element is arranged on one side of the arrangement direction of the light receiving elements. The other side light receiving element is arranged on an other side of the arrangement direction of the light receiving elements. The light guiding member is arranged opposite to the element array portion with respect to the conveyance path so that the light guiding member and the element array portion sandwiches the conveyance path therebetween. The light guiding member includes a first refracting portion, a second refracting portion and a main body portion. The first refracting portion refracts irradiated light of the light emitting element in a direction parallel to the arrangement direction. The second refracting portion refracting the irradiated light refracted by the first refracting portion toward the other side light receiving element The main body portion diffuses in an approximately uniform manner the irradiated light refracted by the first refracting portion toward the light receiving element group.

A bill discriminating apparatus for a bill handling machine including an ultraviolet ray lamp for emitting ultraviolet rays toward bills, a light detector for photoelectrically detecting visible light emitted from phosphor materials contained in bills upon being irradiated with ultraviolet rays and producing visible light detection signals, a visible light detection signal amplifier for amplifying the visible light detection signals produced by the light detector, an ultraviolet ray detector for photoelectrically detecting ultraviolet rays emitted from the ultraviolet ray lamp and producing ultraviolet ray detection signals, a CPU for receiving the visible light detection signals amplified by the visible light detection signal amplifier and the ultraviolet ray detection signals produced by the ultraviolet ray detector and discriminating bills, the CPU adjusting an amplifying factor of the visible light detection signal amplifier in accordance with levels of ultraviolet ray detection signals input from the ultraviolet ray detector. According to this bill discriminating apparatus for a bill handling machine, it is possible to discriminate a denomination of a bill and whether or not a bill is acceptable with high accuracy.

A sheet counting machine including a sheet depositing portion into which sheets are deposited, an endless belt for taking out sheets deposited in the sheet depositing portion one by one and feeding them to the inside, a counter for counting the number of sheets fed from the endless belt, a stacker for stacking sheets counted by the sheet counter, an operating portion operated by the operator and a display for displaying various kinds of information, the sheet counting machine further including a first lid member capable of being opened and closed and a second lid member capable of being opened and closed, the operating portion and the display being formed on an inner surface of the first lid member so that the operating portion and the display are not exposed to the outside when the first lid member is closed, the sheet depositing portion being formed so as to be located below the operating portion and the display when the first lid member is opened, the stacker being formed inside of the second lid member when the second lid member is opened in a predetermined manner and being accommodated in the second lid member so as not to be exposed to the outside when the second lid member is closed, and further including control means for controlling the endless belt so as to be driven only when the second lid member is opened in the predetermined manner so that the stacker is formed. The thus constituted sheet counting means can be made considerably compact and freely portable, can .stack sheets in the stacker in a desired manner and can prevent bill jamming.
