An optical element includes a light guide plate, an incidence portion, and an emission portion, in which the incidence/emission portion includes an Λdiffraction element having a diffraction period Λ, an Λdiffraction element having a diffraction period Λ, and an Λdiffraction element having a diffraction period Λ=1:1√2±0.015:1/2±0.015' is satisfied, an angle between periodic directions of the Λdiffraction element and the Λdiffraction element and an angle between periodic directions of the Λdiffraction element and the Λdiffraction element is 45° or 135° (±0.5°), and an angle between the periodic directions of the Λdiffraction elements in the incidence portion and the emission portion is any one of 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270° (±0.5°).

Optical element and image display apparatus

Provided is a method of manufacturing an optical element in which aligning properties of an alignment pattern in a photo-alignment film is improved such that alignment defects of a liquid crystal compound in a liquid crystal layer can be suppressed. The method of manufacturing an optical element includes: an exposure step of performing interference exposure to a surface of a photo-alignment film including a photo-alignment material to form, on the photo-alignment film, an alignment pattern in which a direction of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction; and a liquid crystal layer forming step of applying a liquid crystal composition including a liquid crystal compound to the photo-alignment film where the alignment pattern is formed to form a liquid crystal layer, in which the photo-alignment material includes an azo compound, and the exposure step is performed in an environment having a relative humidity of 50% or less.

Method of manufacturing optical element

Provided is a sensor having a high SN ratio. The sensor includes a light source, a band pass filter; and a light-receiving element, in which the band pass filter includes a cholesteric liquid crystal layer that is a layer obtained by immobilizing a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a region where a refractive index nx in an in-plane slow axis direction and a refractive index ny in an in-plane fast axis direction satisfy nx>ny, and in a case where a selective reflection wavelength of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer is represented by λ, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a second selective reflection peak at a wavelength λ/and a half-width of the second selective reflection peak at λ/2 is 30 nm or less.

Distance-measuring sensor

Provided are a method of forming a photo-alignment film having a large size that can appropriately align a liquid crystal compound can be formed and a method of forming a liquid crystal layer having a large size in which alignment defects of a liquid crystal compound can be suppressed. The method of forming a photo-alignment film includes: an exposure step of irradiating a surface of a photo-alignment film including a photo-alignment material that is formed on a support with interference light formed by intersection of two light components such that the surface of the photo-alignment film is exposed to form, on the photo-alignment film, an alignment pattern in which a direction of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one in-plane direction; and a moving step of moving the support by a distance D in a direction parallel to the surface of the support and parallel to a straight line formed by optical axes of the two beams, in which the photo-alignment film is exposed by alternately repeating the exposure step and the moving step. Here, the distance D is represented by λ/{2×sin(α/2)}×N−λ/8<D<λ/{2×sin(α/2)}×N+λ/8.

An optical element includes a cholesteric liquid crystal layer obtained by cholesterically aligning a liquid crystal compound, in which the cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a region where a refractive index nx in a slow axis direction and a refractive index ny in a fast axis direction in a plane satisfy nx>ny, a helical axis of the cholesteric alignment is parallel to a thickness direction of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer, and a helical pitch in the cholesteric alignment gradually changes in the thickness direction of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer.

An optical sheet member includes a polarizing plate including a polarizer (A); an optical conversion member (D); and a brightness enhancement film including a reflection polarizer (B), in which the brightness enhancement film has a reflection center wavelength range of 400 nm to 500 nm, and the optical conversion member (D) converts a part of blue light which is transmitted through polarizer (B) and is incident on the optical conversion member (D), and has an emission center wavelength range of 400 nm to 500 nm and which has an emission center wavelength range of 500 nm to 600 nm and red light which has an emission center wavelength range of 600 nm to 700 nm, and transmits a part of the blue light. When the optical sheet member is incorporated in an image display device, front brightness, contrast, and a color reproducing region are enhanced, and color unevenness is reduced.

Provided are a brightness enhancement film including a &#x3bb;/4 plate, and a reflection polarizer, in which the reflection polarizer includes at least two light reflection layers formed by immobilizing a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, one light reflection layer of the reflection layers is a layer formed of a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a rod-like liquid crystal compound, and the other light reflection layer is a layer formed of a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a disk-like liquid crystal compound, and an optical sheet member including the brightness enhancement film, and a liquid crystal display device including the optical sheet member. The brightness enhancement film of the present invention has high brightness and is able to suppress an oblique change in the shade at the time of being incorporated in a liquid crystal display device.

Optical sheet member and image display device employing same

The present invention provides a member for projection image display, including a reflection layer and a retardation layer, wherein the reflection layer includes a cholesteric liquid crystal layer exhibiting selective reflection in a visible light region, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer is a layer formed from a liquid crystal composition containing a discotic liquid crystal compound, and a front phase difference of the retardation layer is in a range of 50 nm to 400 nm; and a projection image display system which includes the above member for projection image display, wherein the retardation layer is disposed on an incident light side relative to the reflection layer, and the incident light is p-polarized light that vibrates in a direction parallel to a plane of incidence, which is capable of displaying a clear image having high reflectance and high transmittance, without a problem of a double image.
