In a transmission control apparatus, connected communication devices are detected to find round trip time of transmission to each of the detected communication devices, and the order of each communication device is determined on the basis of the round trip time of transmission to that communication device depending upon the distance thereto. On the basis of the round trip times of transmission to, and the orders of, the communication devices, transmission wait times are determined for delaying transmission of control signals from the communication devices to notify the communication devices of the transmission wait times. When starting communication with the communication devices, timer start signals prompting the communication devices to start counting the transmission wait time are transmitted to the communication devices.

A bandwidth allocator for communicating with communication terminals by transmitting and receiving data packets over a line having its communication bandwidth divided into periods of time of a predetermined length. The allocator includes a controller controlling allocation of the bandwidth by using allocation grants as the periods of time. The controller includes a scheduler scheduling the allocation grants so as to cause one allocation grant to partially overlap as a shared grant with another allocation grant adjacent to the one allocation grant. Thus, the bandwidth allocator can minimize allocation loss, otherwise caused by no allocation to an allocation grant, and improve the use efficiency of the bandwidth.

A bandwidth allocating control apparatus for use in an optical communication base station has its reception bandwidth divided into a bandwidth for short distance and a bandwidth for long distance. A residual bandwidth calculator calculates a residual bandwidth remaining unallocated in the bandwidth for short distance after having allocated the reception bandwidth to short-distance subscriber terminal units. A middle-distance subscriber terminal classifier uses a middle-distance boundary calculation model representing the relationship between the residual bandwidth and a communication distance from the base station to the subscriber terminal units to further classify long-distance subscriber terminal units into a middle-distance subscriber terminal unit and a long-distance subscriber terminal unit. A middle-distance bandwidth allocator further allocates the residual bandwidth to the middle-distance subscriber terminal unit in addition to a predetermined bandwidth allocated thereto.

Dynamic bandwidth allocating control apparatus with bandwidth usability improved

A data transmission apparatus transmits, in response to a permission signal received from a higher-level data receiver, a required amount of data to the data receiver in a burst. The required amount of data is determined by data transmission control. Data transmission between the apparatus and the data receiver is effected at a preselected timing in such a manner as to absorb a difference between the amount of data to be transmitted over a preselected management time period and the data amount indicated by an expected control value. For this purpose, the apparatus calculates an adequate amount of data to be transmitted over the management time period as a unit amount. The apparatus then manages the maximum amount of data to be transmitted over the management time period for thereby leveling the amounts of data transmitted. This successfully enhances accurate data transmission.
