Catalyst for olefin polymerization and process for producing same

A process for producing .alpha.-olefin polymers is proposed wherein the catalyst prepared and used therein is superior in the shelf stability and heat stability. The process comprises reacting TiCl.sub.4 with a reaction product (I) of an organoaluminum compound with an electron donor to obtain a solid product (II), which is then subjected to polymerization treatment with an .alpha.-olefin, and further reacted with an electron donor and an electron acceptor to obtain a solid product (III), which is then combined with an organoaluminum compound, to obtain a catalyst, in the presence of which .alpha.-olefin(s) are polymerized. The catalyst can be further preactivated with an .alpha.-olefin in advance of its use for the polymerization.

Process for producing alpha-olefin polymers

A solid catalyst component for .alpha.-olefin polymerization which, when produced, causes any troubles due to its small particle size and when used, yields a spherical polymer of a suitably less particle size and a high bulk density with a slightest quantity of atactic polymer and affording a very good dispersibility of powdery additives therein in spite of its narrow particle size distribution, and a process for producing the same, are provided, which solid catalyst component comprises Ti and Cl as active ingredients, having an average particle diameter of 2 to 10.mu., a specific surface area of 100 m.sup.2 /g or more and a diffraction line corresponding to a distance between lattices of 4.80 to 5.10 .ANG. by way of X-ray diffraction; and which process is characterized in that when TiCl.sub.4 is reduced with a reducing agent comprising an organoaluminum compound to produce a solid intermediate, there is employed an agitation intensity defined by definite values of agitation power and baffle ratio.

High-rigidity ethylene-propylene copolymer and process for producing same

A propylene-ethylene block copolymer from which molded products having high rigidity and superior high-impact properties can be prepared even without adding any particular additive, is provided, which copolymer is obtained by (i) polymerizing propylene in 70 to 95 weight % based on the total polymerized amount, using a catalyst obtained by reacting an organoaluminum compound (I) or a reaction product of (I) with an electron donor (A), with TiCl.sub.4, further reacting the resulting solid product (II) with (A) and an electron acceptor (B), and combining the resulting solid product (III) with an organoaluminum compound (IV) and an aromatic carboxylic acid ester (V), the molar ratio of (V) to (III) being 0.1 to 10.0, and then (ii) polymerizing ethylene or ethylene and propylene in 30 to 5 weight % based on the total polymerized amount, at one or more stages, using the same catalyst as above, the ethylene content being 3 to 20 weight % based on the total polymerized amount.

A supported type catalyst component for .alpha.-olefin polymerization, having a higher activity and capable of affording a highly stereoregular polymer is provided, which component comprises a solid product (II) obtained by reacting Mg compound(s) of formula MgR.sup.1 R.sup.2 (wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy and R.sup.2, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy or halogen), with a complex of compound(s) selected from Al halides and Al compounds of formula AlR.sub.n.sup.3 X.sub.3-n (wherein R.sub.3 is alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy; X, halogen; 0.ltoreq.n&lt;2) with an organic acid ester; and reacting the resulting solid product (I) (a carrier) with a liquid halogen-containing Ti compound. Preactivation of the solid product (II) with an organoaluminum compound and an .alpha.-olefin affords a catalyst component superior in storage stability and polymerization reproducibility.

This process is characterized by preliminarily activating a catalyst consisting of a titanium trichloride composition and a specified organoaluminum halide, with a small amount of an .alpha.-olefin of 2 to 12 carbon atoms, a trialkylaluminum and an aromatic ester, and copolymerizing specified amounts of propylene, ethylene and an .alpha.-olefin of 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the presence of the preliminarily activated catalyst obtained above.

Process for producing terpolymers of propylene, ethylene and another .alpha

A process for producing highly crystalline .alpha.-olefin polymers of good particle form with high yield is provided, which comprises polymerizing .alpha.-olefin in the presence of a preactivated catalyst obtained by reacting a reaction product (I) of organoaluminum compound (A.sub.1) with electron donor (B.sub.1), with TiCl.sub.4 to obtain a solid product (II); further reacting (II) with electron donor (B.sub.2) and electron acceptor to obtain a solid product (III); during or/and after the reaction step for obtaining (II) or/and during or/and after the reaction step for obtaining (III), subjecting (II) or (III), to polymerization treatment with .alpha.-olefin; and combining the resulting final solid product with organo-aluminum compound (A.sub.2) and a reaction product (G) of organo-aluminum compound (A.sub.3) with electron donor (B.sub.3) to obtain a preactivated catalyst; and preferably, in this combination, further subjecting a part or the total of the catalyst to polymerization treatment with .alpha.-olefin in the presence of the final solid product and (A.sub.2) to obtain another preactivated catalyst. The catalyst has a superior storage stability and heat stability.

A process for producing .alpha.-olefin polymers with a controlled stereoregularity and with a higher yield is provided, which process comprises: combining a TiCl.sub.3 -containing composition obtained by reducing TiCl.sub.4, with an organoaluminum compound; thereafter subjecting the composition to a polymerization treatment with an .alpha.-olefin; before, during or after the polymerization treatment, adding an electron donor or/and an electron acceptor or a reaction product of these two; as well as adding a reaction product of a trialkylaluminum with an electron donor having a specified molar ratio of the electron donor to the trialkylaluminum selected in the range of 0.01 to 5; and polymerizing an .alpha.-olefin in the presence of the resulting preactivated catalyst.

A method for producing .alpha.-olefin polymers is provided. This method provides products having superior properties such as higher bulk density and uniform particle form which is close to sphere, with such an extremely higher catalyst efficiency that ash-removal step can be omitted without fear of coloring.
