An optical input card is shaped and sized for removable slidable insertion within a slot of a portable computer. The optical input card comprises an optical navigation sensor, a control panel and a wireless communication module. The optical navigation sensor is disposed on the first side of the card for exposure to a navigation surface and is configured to capture a first user control input. The control panel on a second side of the card is configured to capture at least one second user control input. The wireless communication module is configured to wirelessly communicate the first user control input and the at least one second user control input to the portable computer.

Finger-based identification systems and methods are described. In one aspect, a two-dimensional fingerprint image of a person's finger contacting an input surface is captured. Finger trace data is captured from movement of the person's finger over the input surface. Based on the captured two-dimensional fingerprint image and the captured finger trace data, a determination is made whether the person corresponds to an enrolled person.

Finger-based identification systems and methods

Methods, systems, and apparatus for correcting micro-defects on a Fresnel lens surface are described. In one aspect, a measured amount of fluid coating material is applied to the grooved side of a Fresnel lens body, such that in addition to a thin layer of fluid coating material adhering to the surfaces of lens facets and the draft facets of the Fresnel lens body, some of the liquid coating material pools at the bottom corners of the grooves and forms a curved meniscus thereat. The pooled liquid coating material fills out the micro-defects existing in the bottom corners of the grooves. The surface profile of the liquid coating material traces closely to the designed profile of the Fresnel lens body. When the liquid coating material solidifies, the resulting solid coating serves to reduce the undesirable optical effects of the micro-defects in the bottom corners of the Fresnel lens body.

An imaging system that includes a sheet media stack over a recording unit. Image data is generated in response to radiation received from a field of view encompassing sheet media edges of individual media within the sheet media stack. Edges of individual media are detected within the image data.

Embodiments of the present invention generally provide an apparatus and method for forming a display screen assembly that comprises multiple panel assemblies which are positioned to form a tiled display device that has improved visual characteristics, is easy to assemble and has a reduced manufacturing cost. In general, each panel assembly is formed so that when it is positioned in a display screen assembly the grid pattern, formed by the gap between the illuminated regions in adjacent panel assemblies, can be minimized. In one embodiment, the unwanted visual effect of the grid pattern is mitigated by minimizing and controlling the space, or gaps, formed between the illuminated area in adjacent panel assemblies. Embodiments of the present invention may also provide an apparatus and method for forming a single panel assembly that is used to display an image.

Methods and systems for forming a chief ray angle (CRA) profile of an imaging lens having a field of view (FOV) are provided. At least one CRA sensor is positioned between an edge of a pixel array and an edge of the FOV, at one or more predetermined lens height percentages. Light is transmitted through the imaging lens and detected by multiple detectors included in the at least one CRA sensor. Each detector is configured to detect a different predetermined CRA. For each CRA sensor, a largest amplitude of detected light among the multiple detectors is selected. The largest amplitude of light represents a CRA of the transmitted light. At least one data point of the CRA profile is determined, by using the selected predetermined CRA at the one or more predetermined lens height percentages.

Integrated optical characteristic measurements in a CMOS image sensor

A pointing device generates pixel counts at a predetermined frame rate indicative of motion in predetermined axes of a user's digit across an imaging surface. A cursor motion controller receives the pixel counts and generates navigation output signals representing averages over predetermined time intervals selected to smooth the motion of a cursor on the display of an electronic apparatus. Optionally, the cursor motion controller can multiply a pixel count in each frame by a predetermined acceleration factor so that a cursor on the display of an electronic apparatus will move a greater distance based on an increased rate of motion of the user's digit across the imaging surface. Optionally, the cursor motion controller can interrupt the generation of navigation output signals for a predetermined interrupt period after completion of a cursor stroke. The averaging, acceleration and interruption features can be used independently or in various combinations.

An imaging system that includes a sheet media stack over a recording unit is provided. The imaging system generates image data in response to radiation received from a field of view encompassing sheet media edges of individual media within the sheet media stack. The imaging system detects edges of individual media within the image data.

A controller apparatus for manipulating objects in an electronic application. The controller apparatus comprises a free-standing graspable controller. The controller apparatus comprises a first optical component and a second optical component to determine the rotation direction and speed of the controller. The direction and speed data are relayed to the electronic device to produce an object manipulation in the electronic application.

A fingerprint verification device includes a fingerprint sensor including an imaging surface. The fingerprint sensor is configured to capture images of a user's finger when the finger is swiped against the imaging surface. A memory stores fingerprint data. A controller compares minutiae in the captured images with the stored fingerprint data to verify the user's identity. The controller is configured to determine whether the finger is a real human finger based on the spacing of minutiae in the captured images.

A method and system for far field image navigation sensing are described. The method includes pre-processing an image from a remote beacon into gray scale and contour data. Multiple frames of the image, including the gray scale and contour data are buffered. The beacon image is reconstructed from the buffered frames, which include blur data related to the beacon image. A position of the beacon is measured from the buffered frames. The blur data are analyzed to generate a blur vector. The beacon position and blur vector are processed to generate navigation information based on the beacon.

Method and system for far field image absolute navigation sensing

A computer mouse having rotational detectability is disclosed. The mouse has an outer housing adapted for directional movement on a horizontal plane. The mouse includes the conventional left and right buttons and scroll wheel. Additionally, the mouse includes an extendable plunger which, when extended, prohibits movement of the mouse in x-y directions yet permits rotational movement about the plunger. A sensor is included proximate the plunger for measuring rotational movement of the mouse about the plunger in the horizontal plane.

In a handheld device mode of operation, the display control signals are selectively communicated to a display subsystem of a handheld device.
