A sodium sulfur cell comprising an anode active material of metallic sodium, and a cathode active material of sulfur or sodium polysulfide, and a beta alumina solid electrolyte separator, the above active materials containing, as an impurity, calcium of at most 20 ppm and/or potassium of at most 200 ppm, by weight. The cell of the invention has excellent characteristics, particularly prolonged electromotive life.

In order to improve a reliability of a glass joint body, first ceramic member and second ceramic member are connected by using (a) glass consisting of 10.about.65 wt % of SiO.sub.2, 30 wt % or less of Na.sub.20, and the balance of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, (b) glass including less than 10 wt % of SiO.sub.2, and 30.about.80 wt % of B.sub.2 O.sub.3, (c) glass including substantially none of SiO.sub.2, and 30.about.80 wt % of B.sub.2 O.sub.3, or (d) glass consisting of 10.about.65 wt % of SiO.sub.2, 20 wt % or less of Na.sub.2 O, 30 wt % or less of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 20 wt % or less of MgO, and the balance of B.sub.2 O.sub.3.

A method of bonding at least two members having different coefficients of thermal expansion is disclosed, wherein an edge of a bonding interface between the members is positioned in a tapered portion, thereby bridging one member having a smaller coefficient of thermal expansion and another having a larger coefficient of thermal expansion. Joined structures are disclosed, which each comprise first and second members having different coefficients of thermal expansion and an intermediate member. The first and second members are joined together through the intermediate member. The intermediate member has yield stress smaller than those of the first and second members, and a tapered portion is formed at an outer peripheral surface of the intermediate member such that the tapered portion has a variable cross-sectional area orthogonal to an axis of the joined members. The area is larger at one end of the tapered portion near one of the first and second members having a smaller coefficient of thermal expansion than the area at the other end of the tapered portion near the other one of the first and second members having a larger coefficient of thermal expansion. A method of joining such first and second members having different coefficients of thermal expansion through the intermediate member is also disclosed.

Ceramic-metal composite bodies and a process for the production thereof are disclosed. The ceramic-metal composite body includes a metallic member and a ceramic member which are integrally joined together by fitting a projection formed on the ceramic member to a recess formed in the metallic member. The projection of the ceramic member is fitted and joined into the recess of the metallic member in a vessel of which the inside is kept at an atmosphere having a pressure lower than an atmospheric pressure. The pressure of air remaining in a space left between the recess and the fitted projection is lower than that of the air in the space when the projection is fitted into the recess in the atmospheric pressure. An apparatus for fitting and joining the projection of the ceramic member to the recess of the metallic member is also disclosed, which includes a pressure-reducible vessel which is provided with a space for receiving at least the projection of the ceramic member and the recess of the metallic member, a sealing structure including O-rings or the like, a pipe opening for exhausting air inside the vessel, and a movable push rod for pressing and fitting the projection of the ceramic member into the recess of the metallic member.
