A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1 is a free or an esterified carboxyl group, or a group of the formula: ##STR2## (R.sup.a and R.sup.b are each independently a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group, a benzyl group, a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted with a halogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, or, when taken together with the adjacent nitrogen atom to which they are attached, they represent a 5 to 7 membered saturated heterocyclic group, Y.sup.1 is a group of the formula: ##STR3## (R.sup.6 is a hydrogen atom or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group), ##STR4## (R.sup.6 is as defined above), ##STR5## R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, when taken together, mean a shingle linkage to from a double bond between the carbon atoms which they are linked, R.sup.3 is a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.5 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkenyl group, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkynyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl group, a C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 cycloalkenyl group, a hydroxy C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 heterocyclic group, a phenyl group optionally substituted with a halogen atom; a hydroxyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a trifluoromethyl group, or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a formula: A-B (A is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkylene chain and B is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 cycloalkyl group, a C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 cycloalkenyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkoxy group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 cycloalkoxy group, a C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 cycloalkenyloxy group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 heterocyclic group, or a phenyl or phenoxy group optionally substituted with a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a trifluoromethyl group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group); or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Said compound have strong anti-ulcerous action or antithrombotic action, and are useful in treatment of ulcer or thrombosis.

Carbacyclin analogs

A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1 is a free or an esterified carboxyl group, or a group of the formula: ##STR2## (R.sup.a and R.sup.b are each independently a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group, a benzyl group, a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted with a halogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, or, when taken together with the adjacent nitrogen atom to which they are attached, they represent a 5 to 7 membered saturated heterocyclic group), Y is a group of the formula: ##STR3## (R.sup.6 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group) or ##STR4## (R.sup.6 is as defined above), R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, when taken together, mean a single linkage to form a double bond between the carbon atoms which they are linked, R.sup.3 is a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.5 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkynyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkenyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group, a hydroxy C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl group or a group of the formula: --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --B (m is 1 or 2 and B is a C.sub.1 14 C.sub.4 alkoxy, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, or a phenyl or phenoxy group optionally substituted with a halogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a trifluoromethyl group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group), and n is 2 or 3; or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Said compounds have strong anti-cancer activity and are useful in treatment of a cancer.

Imino-bicyclo (3.3.0) octane derivatives

A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1 is a free or esterified carboxyl group, a hydroxymethyl group, a cyano group, a group of the formula: ##STR2## (R.sup.a and R.sup.b are each independently a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group, a benzyl group, a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted with a halogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, or, when taken together with the adjacent nitrogen atom to which they are attached, they represent a 5 to 7-membered saturated heterocyclic group) or a group of the formula: ##STR3## (R.sup.a and R.sup.b are each as defined above), Y is an ethylene group or a vinylene group, R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, when taken together, means a single linkage to form a double bond between the carbon atoms which they are linked, R.sup.3 is a hydroxyl group or a protected hydroxyl group, R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.5 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkenyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkynyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group or a group of the formula: --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --B (n is 1 or 2 and B is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 cycloalkyl group, or a phenyl or phenoxy group optionally substituted with a halogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a trifluoromethyl group or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxyl group), A is a group of either one of the formulae: ##STR4## (R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are each independently a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group) and ##STR5## m.sub.1 is 1 or 2 and m.sub.2 is 0, 1 or 2, and the non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable salts threreof. Said compounds have strong anti-ulcerogenic activity and are useful in treatment of gastraintestinal ulcer.

Bicyclooctane derivatives

A novel bicyclooctane derivative represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, X is ethylene or vinylene, and Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are independently hydrogen or a hydroxyl-protecting group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of said compound in which R.sub.1 is hydrogen. Said compound and pharmaceutically acceptable salt are chemically stable, have platelet anti-aggregation activity without undesirable pharmacological actions and exhibit the duration of high biological activity.

Novel bicyclooctane compounds

A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein A.sub.1 is a single bond or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylene group bonding at the 2-, 2'- or 3-position, A.sub.2 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkylene group, A.sub.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylene group, X is --O-- or --SO.sub.n -- and B is a carboxy group, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkoxycarbonyl group, a cyano group, an amino group of the formula: ##STR2## or a carbamoyl group of the formula: ##STR3## which is useful as an antiviral agent with no side effect.

Tricyclic cage compounds, their synthesis and use as antiviral agents

A process for producing novel aldol derivatives of the formula, ##STR1## wherein C=W is a carbonyl group or a protected carbonyl group which comprises reacting a compound of the formula: ##STR2## wherein C=W is as defined above in the presence of an acid or a base at a temperature ranging from -70.degree. C. to room temperature. The novel aldol derivatives of the above formula are useful as intermediate for producing methanoprostacyclin derivatives which are useful medicines for prevention of thrombosis.

Novel indan compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein A and X are each ethylene or vinylene; B is C.sub.2-4 alkylene; R and R.sub.2 are each hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sub.1 is C.sub.1-8 alkyl; &lt;C = Z is &lt;C = O, or ##STR2## and its non-toxic salts, which are useful as antiulcers, gastric secretion inhibitors, and hypotensors.
