A clamping device that fixes a disc onto a spindle motor that rotates the disc includes a clamp ring that is layered on the disc, and a screw that fixes the clamp ring onto the spindle motor, and has a seating surface that inclines relative to a plane perpendicular to an axis of the screw, the seating surface of the screw having an inclined angle greater than a plane that contacts the seating surface of the screw of the clamp ring before the clamp ring is fixed by the screw.

A disk unit, such as a magnetic disk unit, has a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, a heater, a Peltier element, etc. The disk unit heats and cools in accordance with temperature and humidity. The disk unit has a double-structure of outline comprising a first outline and a second outline surrounding said first outline, so that an internal environment is isolated from an external environment.

A head lifting device includes a head-supporting member, a magnetic or optical head supported by the head-supporting arm and a base member for supporting the head-supporting arm. This arm is formed with at least one hole, while the base member is provided with a protrusion coming into contact with the inner wall of the hole. The head-supporting arm and the base member are held together by an elastic clip, with the protrusion held in sliding engagement with the hole.

A lens actuator of an optical head for an optical disc drive includes a two-dimensional actuator supported by a carriage via a spring, a second lens held by the two-dimensional actuator, a slider supported by the two-dimensional actuator and floated off a turning optical disc, and a first lens held by the slider. A laser beam is focused on the optical disc by an object lens system which includes the first lens and the second lens. The slider is supported by the two-dimensional actuator via a support having a predetermined spring constant in the focus directions while also having freedom to follow tilting of the optical disc.

Lens actuator

An optical disk drive has a swing arm that is pivotally supported and upon which is mounted an optical head. The optical head illuminates a small laser beam spot, through an objective lens, onto an optical disk. The swing arm is rotated around a pivotable supporting assembly by a rotary motor through a gear train. One of the gears in the gear train is mounted on a tip of the arm. The arm is stably supported at two portions&mdash;one portion being the pivotable supporting assembly and the other portion being the rotary motor cooperating with the gear train. One of gears in the gear train preferably has a backlash eliminator including a plurality of associated gears, one of which is elastically suspended by a biasing element that applies a force in a constant direction. The rotary motion of the rotary motor is transferred to arm-rotation without slippage. The drive has an electromagnet, which applies a magnetic field onto the disk and is mounted a position opposite to the objective lens with respect to the disk.

Optical disk drive having a swing arm

An optical head unit used for an optical disk apparatus is provided. The optical head unit includes an object glass assembly for focusing a laser beam from a light source on an optical disk, an actuator movable at least in a focus control direction, a carriage for supporting the actuator and moving the actuator in a track control direction, and a slider which is attached to the carriage and capable of adjusting its posture in relation to a surface of the optical disk. The object glass assembly is provided with a plurality of lens units. Each lens unit includes at least one lens. One of the plural lens units is supported by the slider.

Optical head unit for optical disk apparatus having both focus control and track control function

A magnetic head used in a magneto-optical disk apparatus is provided. The magnetic head includes a slider brought into facing relation to a disk member rotatable in a predetermined rotating direction. The slider includes a leading portion and a trailing portion which is spaced downstream from the leading portion in the above rotating direction. The magnetic head also includes a first magnetic field generator carried by the slider and a second magnetic field generator carried by the slider. The second magnetic field generator is arranged closer to the trailing portion of the slider than the first magnetic field generator is.

Magneto-optical head having dual magnetic field generators

An optical disk apparatus includes a spindle motor for rotating a mounted optical disk, and a swing-motion type optical head apparatus. The swing-motion type optical head apparatus scans the optical disk in a radial direction of the optical disk by moving the objective lens. The head apparatus is made to swing about a swing axis in a plane parallel to a recording surface of the mounted optical disk. The swing-motion type optical head apparatus includes an arm carrying the objective lens thereupon, and provided at the first side of the mounted optical disk. A supporting member is provided for supporting the arm so as to enable the arm to swing about the axis. Driving device are provided for causing the arm to swing. The supporting member and the driving device are provided at a location outside the optical disk when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the recording surface. The mounted optical disk has a level within a height of the supporting member and the driving device, such that the supporting member and the driving device extend from the first side of the mounted optical disk to a second, opposite side of the mounted optical disk.

Compact optical disk apparatus having a swing-motion optical head

A lens actuator in an optical disk apparatus, wherein a rotation drive unit rotates a lens holder including a plurality of objective lenses which have different optical characteristics from each other, and which are disposed on a circumference whose center coincides with an axis of rotation of the lens holder to thereby switch the objective lenses and place an objective lens �to! in a predetermined position.

Lens actuator and optical disk apparatus

An optical semiconductor apparatus includes a laser diode for producing an optical beam, a base body formed with a first reference surface adapted for engagement with an external apparatus and a second reference surface separated from the first reference surface with a predetermined distance, and a subcarrier member having a principal surface for carrying the laser diode thereon said principal surface, wherein the subcarrier is mounted upon the base body in an abutted state such that the principal surface establishes an intimate engagement with the second reference surface. The base body is formed with a depression on the second reference surface so as to accommodate therein the laser diode when the subcarrier member is mounted upon the base body together with the laser diode that is mounted upon the principal surface.
