A gas generator for air bags for use in an air bag system for safely protecting a driver and riders in a vehicle from shock from collisions at low cost, while preventing slag in a gas flowing outside. The gas generator includes a housing ( ) formed by a side cylinder ( ) with a plurality of gas exhaust openings ( ) the housing being closed at its ends by an upper cap ( ) and a lower cap ( ); an igniting device ( ), provided in the housing ( ) at a center portion thereof; gas generating agents ( ), provided in the housing ( ) at a location radially outside of the igniting device ( ), to be burnt to generate gas; a cooling/filtering member ( ) provided in the housing ( ) at a location radially outside of the gas generating agents ( ) to enclose the gas generating agents and extending from the side of the upper cap ( ) to the side of the lower cap ( ); and an annular projection ( ) for preventing the gas generated by the burning of the gas generating agents ( ) from flowing toward an end portion of the cooling/filtering member ( ). The annular projection ( ) is integrally formed on at least one of the upper cap ( ) and the lower cap ( ) so as to abut with an inner peripheral surface of the cooling/filtering member ( ).

The present invention provides a gas generating agent for an air bag including a fuel component of nitrogenous organic compound and an oxidizing agent as its major components, to which at least one metal nitride or metal carbide that is allowed to react with a metallic component contained in the fuel component or the oxidizing agent to form slag is added, thus providing the effects of: solving the slag collecting problem which stands in the way of commercially practicing the nitrogenous organic compound base fuels; promoting the size reduction of the gas generator through the full use of high rate of gasification of the nitrogenous organic compound base fuels; and providing a gas generating agent molded member which is strong and stable with age by improving heat resistant properties and formability of the nitrogenous organic compound base fuels which are poor compared with the metallic compound azide of an inorganic matter.

To detect an impact due to a shock with high precision and stability, a shock sensor is employed which provides a sufficiently long closure interval of a contact of a reed switch (1) enough to carry out signal processing. A gap between an outer surface of a magnet (2) and an inner wall (8) of a housing (7) defining a passage for the magnet (2) comprises a first gap (G1) between a stationary position and an activating position and a second gap (G2) between the activating position and a stop position. The inner wall (8) is formed so that the first gap (G1) is greater than the second gap (G2). The velocity of the magnet (2) is lower when travelling in the second gap (G2) than the velocity in the first gap (G1) because air resistance is greater in the second gap (G2). Accordingly, the closure interval is increased. Alternatively, the closure interval of the contact of the reed switch (1) is adjusted by first and second coil springs (3, 49) which independently urge first and second magnets (2, 48) in an anti-impact direction, respectively. To cope with various collision modes, spring constants (k1, k2) of the first and the second coil springs (3, 49) and masses (m1, m2) of the first and the second magnets (2, 48) are selected so that the velocity of shock-responsive movement is different between a first group comprising the first magnet (2) and the first coil spring (3) and a second group comprising the second magnet (48) and the second coil spring (49).

Shock sensor

The crash sensor of the present invention comprises a magnet, a sensing mass made of a ferromagnetic material and attractable by the magnet, a sleeve made of a paramagnetic material and restricting the movement of the sensing mass in one direction, a pair of strips that make a closed circuit by contact with the sensing mass having moved in one direction and a body fitted with the magnet and housing the sensing mass, the sleeve and the contacts; the crash sensor further comprising a magnetic shield made of a ferromagnetic material and covering the magnet and the body. The magnetic shield forms a closed-type magnetic field by covering the magnet and the body and forms an appropriate magnetic loop in the vicinity of the sensing mass, so that the crash sensor also acts as a magnetic shield to protect itself from being influenced by outside ferromagnetic bodies and makes effective use of the magnetic force of the magnet. The above pair of strips are fitted in the same direction vertically on the inner wall of the body, whereby they do not project out in the axial direction so that the crash sensor can be of a reduced whole length, as well as of smaller outside diameter than conventional crash sensor with its contacts positioned facing each other.
