A disk drive. The disk drive includes a motor, a hub coupled to a spindle shaft of the motor, at least two disks each having a center hole and being coupled to the hub, and a spacer having a center hole. The spacer is disposed around the hub such that the hub is disposed within the center hole of the spacer; and, the spacer is sandwiched between and in contact with the two disks to define spacing between the disks. The spacer includes at least two conductive rings and the conductive rings are secured between the two disks. The spacer also includes a damping sheet configured to absorb vibration between the conductive rings, and a conductive ring-shaped spring having a spring characteristic in a radial direction of the disks to make a diameter variable. Moreover, the conductive ring-shaped spring is in contact with both of the two conductive rings.

Embodiments of the present invention help to achieve a solder joining structure having high reliability, in which even if a componential material of a flange of a feed-through of a sealed magnetic disk drive is an iron-based material such as Kovar&#x2122;, and a componential material of a base of the drive is an aluminum-based alloy, leakage of low-density gas is dramatically reduced. According to one embodiment, a base has a stepped portion in the inside of a periphery of an opening, and an inclined surface extending to the outside of the base is formed at an edge of a surface of the stepped portion, on which a flange of a feed-through is placed, thereby when the stepped portion of the base is joined by soldering with the flange of the feed-through, a solder fillet is formed not only in the inside of the base, but also in the outside thereof.

To efficiently manufacture a feedthrough used in a disk drive device having a hermetically sealed enclosure, embodiments of the present invention manufacture a feedthrough used in an HDD having a hermetically sealed enclosure. An embodiment of a manufacturing method of the present embodiment manufactures a columnar body, cuts the columnar body in the direction vertical to the axes of pins, and cuts out a feedthrough. Then, necessary plating is made on the outer surfaces of the cut out feedthrough. The columnar body comprises a hollow tube, a plurality of pins inserted inside the tube, and an insulating sealant filled inside the tube. This manufacturing method achieves efficient manufacture of the feedthrough.

A sealing type magnetic disc drive comprising a disc, a spindle motor for rotationally driving the disc, a head for recording or reproducing information on the disc, a base on which an actuator assembly is provided to move the head in the radius direction on the disc, and a cover jointed with the base, and low density gas is filled in the space where the base and the cover are joined, wherein low vapor pressure oil or a low viscosity adhesive is filled in a hole present at the joint of the base and the cover.

Embodiments of the present invention help to provide a magnetic disk drive in which the base and the lid are securely welded together, so that the low-density gas sealed therein is protected from leakage. According to one embodiment, the peripheral surface of the rib of the base is machined to form the surface, which is free of electrocoating and weld surface. The outer lid, which completely conforms to the contour of the base, is placed on the rib, and the laser beam is directed onto the outer lid. Thus the position of laser beam irradiation varies within only &#xb1;0.05 mm for both the base and the lid. Laser welding in this manner yields the bead invariably, which makes the enclosure completely sealed without helium leakage.

Magnetic disk drive and method for production thereof

Embodiments of the present invention allow a cover of a magnetic disk drive to be temporarily joined to a base without widening a mounting space, and completely joined after a head disk assembly (HDA) inspection. According to one embodiment, a cover includes a metal plate, an adhesive, and a seal member. The adhesive has a surface wider than the metal plate and the seal member has a surface wider than the adhesive. A solder is coated or printed at an outer periphery of the seal member. A gasket is set at a flange of a base sidewall and an outer peripheral portion of the adhesive of the cover is affixed to an upper surface of the base sidewall to temporarily fix the cover. Low-density gas is injected in a casing interior and a functional inspection of the HDA is performed. After the inspection is finished, helium is injected again, and the casing is completely sealed by melting the solder of the seal member, and joining the seal member to a collar-shaped protrusion of the base sidewall by the solder.

Embodiments of the invention provide a disk drive capable of reducing vibrations of a disk generated by an airflow produced as the disk rotates. In one embodiment, a disk drive comprises: a rotary magnetic disk, a base for housing the magnetic disk, a top cover for closing the disk in the base to form an enclosure, a circulating filter arranged externally of the magnetic disk to trap dust within the enclosure, and an airflow guide for guiding an airflow which flows out of the circulating filter more to the center side than to the outer edge portion of the magnetic disk. Further, a shut out portion is provided in the vicinity of the outer edge portion of the magnetic disk to shut out an airflow which flows out in the vicinity of the outer edge portion.

The invention is a hard-disk-drive (HDD) assembly that includes a flame having the exterior dimensions of a particular form-factor HDD, an HDD with a form-factor smaller than the frame, a pair of mount assemblies that support the HDD entirely within the larger form-factor frame, and an electrical cable located entirely within the frame and having one end connected to the HDD and the other end exposed to the frame exterior at the position determined by the specifications of the larger form-factor. The HDD assembly thus presents a smaller form-factor HDD as a fully plug-compatible alternative to a larger form-factor HDD. Embodiments of the present invention pertain to a disk drive coupling apparatus for rigidly coupling a disk drive to a chassis of a computer. In one embodiment, the disk drive coupling apparatus includes a disk drive to chassis coupler and a disk drive to chassis coupler engaging mechanism. One end of the disk drive to chassis coupler can be coupled to the chassis of the computer. The disk drive to chassis coupler engaging mechanism is capable of causing the other end of the disk drive to chassis coupler to apply pressure to the disk drive, thus, the disk drive can be rigidly coupled to the chassis.

A magnetic head device which can accommodate higher data transfer rates can be implemented by using lead wires. A magnetic head device according to the present invention includes a head slider having a magnetic head having a data reading element and a data writing element, a reading lead RL for transferring data between the data reading element and external devices, the reading lead configured by a pair of lead wires which are twisted together, and a writing lead WL for transferring data between the data writing element and external devices, the writing lead configured by a pair of lead wires which are untwisted but arranged in parallel to each other. Thus, the magnetic head device can accommodate higher data transfer rates by using the writing lead WL configured by a pair of lead wires which are untwisted but arranged in parallel to each other.

To provide a dehumidification apparatus which can perpetually maintain the internal humidity of a disk drive low and can be installed on a cover or the like of the disk drive with a small space. Also, the dehumidification apparatus is controlled based on the internal humidity or the temperature condition inside and outside the disk drive, by which stable dehumidification can be effected without condensation etc. occurring inside and outside of the disk drive. There are provided a glass fiber which is arranged penetrating a cover of a hard disk drive (HDD) and extends inside and outside the HDD, and a heating member provided outside the HDD, so that the glass fiber on the outside is bonded to the heating member and is heated. Also, a cooling member is provided inside the HDD, and the glass fiber on the inside is bonded to the cooling member. Also, there is provided an apparatus for circulating air that is in contact with a heating portion and a cooling portion.
