A gas tank arrangement for a breathing apparatus, including: a gas tank; an inlet valve configured to control a flow of gas into said gas tank; an outlet valve configured to control a flow of gas out of said gas tank and towards a patient; and a controller configured to control said inlet and outlet valves to maintain the gas within said gas tank at an overpressure for subsequent delivery to the patient, to control the outlet valve based on a parameter that is indicative of pressure within the gas tank, and to control the inlet and outlet valves to always maintain the pressure in the gas tank between a minimum pressure threshold value and a maximum pressure threshold value, wherein the minimum or maximum pressure threshold value is determined based on preset parameters relating to the dynamics of said outlet valve, or a desired minimum or maximum flow of gas out of the gas tank.

Vaporizer arrangement for a breathing apparatus

A system for carbon dioxide (CO2) removal from a circulatory system of a patient includes a medical device providing extracorporeal lung assist (ECLA) treatment to the patient through extracorporeal removal of CO2 from the patient's blood; at least one control unit controlling the operation of the medical device so as to control a degree of CO2 removal obtained by the ECLA treatment; and a bioelectric sensor detecting a bioelectric signal indicative of the patient's efforts to breathe. The at least one control unit is configured to control the operation of the medical device based on the detected bioelectric signal.

A vaporizer arrangement for a breathing apparatus serves the double purpose of vaporizer and pressurized supply of vapor-containing gas for direct delivery to a patient. The vaporizer arrangement has at least a first gas inlet channel for conveying a flow of a carrier gas into a vaporization chamber, a vaporizer for vaporizing a liquid into the carrier gas in the vaporization chamber, and a gas outlet channel for conveying a flow of vapor-containing carrier gas out of the vaporization chamber and toward the patient. The vaporizer arrangement further has a gas flow regulator that maintains the carrier gas within the vaporization chamber at an overpressure, and that controls the flow of vapor-containing carrier gas out of the vaporization chamber in a variable manner.

A ventilation system provides patient-triggered support ventilation to a spontaneously breathing patient during ongoing high frequency ventilation (HFV), and has a pneumatic unit operated by a control computer for delivery of breathing gas in response to an effort to breathe by the patient, and an oscillator for superimposing high frequency oscillation onto the breathing gas. The system further includes a bioelectric sensor that measures a bioelectric signal indicative of the patient's efforts to breathe, and the control computer controls the delivery of breathing gas in response to the patient's effort to breathe, based on this bioelectric signal. The ventilation system is hence designed for neurally triggered support ventilation during ongoing HFV, which makes the trigger mechanism of the ventilation system more precise and robust compared to known trigger mechanisms of HFV ventilation systems.

In an anesthesia vaporizer for vaporizing an anesthetic agent liquid and a method of vaporizing an anesthetic agent liquid in an vaporizer, an evaporation unit evaporates the anesthetic agent, a delivery unit intermittently adds a volume of said liquid to the evaporation unit in order to evaporate at least a portion of the volume of the liquid from the evaporation unit. A heat energy storage unit includes a phase change material (PCM) and is thermally coupled to at least a portion of the evaporation unit. The PCM has a phase shift temperature that is higher than the evaporation temperature of the anesthetic agent. The PCM in the heat energy storage unit is preferably at least partly liquid at an operative temperature of the vaporizer.

Anesthetic vaporizer for a breathing apparatus and method for operation thereof to vaporize a liquid anesthetic agent

A ventilator intended to be connected to a patient for breathing therapy has a control unit having an input for receiving EMG signals from an EMG detector and an output for an EMG based control signal and a pneumatic unit for generating breathing gas flows dependent on the EMG based control signal is described. The ventilator has a detector for determining a parameter related to breathing dynamics for the patient, this detector being connected to the control unit and control unit controlling the pneumatic unit dependent on the parameter related to breathing dynamics in the case of loss of EMG signals at the input.

A patient ventilation system has a flow regulating and gas mixing arrangement connected to an inspiratory channel of the system from which a gas mixture containing oxygen and at least a second gas is delivered to the system's proximal tubing. The proximal tubing further is connected to an expiratory channel and is connectable to a patient. The system further has at least two gas inlets connected to the flow regulating and mixing arrangement, and a gas identification unit in which the at least second gas supplied to the system via one of the gas inlets can be identified. By actively measuring a value that is dependent on the characteristics of the delivered gas, and by correcting the calibration of the flow regulating and gas mixing arrangement and/or the flow meter(s) based on this value, both safety and flow regulation in the system are enhanced.

Patient ventilation system with a gas identification unit

A device is directly or indirectly connectable to a patient for determining a volume related to the lungs of the patient. The device has an inspiration part through which a breathing gas passes towards the patient, and an expiration part through which the breathing gas passes away from the patient. The inspiration part has a mouthpiece for introducing a change of the gas composition in the breathing gas. The device implements a method for determining the volume with a detector being arranged in the expiration part that measures a measuring parameter which is dependent on the change in the gas composition, and with a calculation unit connected to the detector unit that determines the variation in the measuring parameter, and determines the volume from the determined variation.

In a method and breathing apparatus for assessing pulmonary stress, wherein pressure controlled flow of respiratory gas is generated, an ensuing flow is measured, resistance and compliance are determined based on measured pressure and flow and a stress index value is determined based on pressure, flow, resistance and compliance. The stress index value is 1 when no stress is present, &#x2267;1 when there is a risk for overdistension and &#x2266;1 when alveolar units are at a risk of being cyclically closed and opened. Implemented in a breathing apparatus the method can be used to assist an operator in diagnostic and therapeutic considerations in relation to a patient.

Method and breathing apparatus for assessing pulmonary stress

A nerve stimulation device has a pulse generator for generating stimulation pulses and an output for the stimulation pulses from the pulse generator, which is connectable to an electrode arrangement adapted for interaction with a living being to stimulate the phrenic nerve. The nerve stimulation device is made more safe and effective by the provision of an input connectable to an esophageal electrode for the reception of measurement signals. The esophageal electrode is adapted to be inserted in the esophagus of the living being for obtaining measurement signals. A signal analyzer filters myo-electrical signals from the diaphragm out of the measurement signals and a regulating unit regulates the pulse generator dependent on the myo-electrical signals.

In a method and apparatus for determining an aspiration flow and an aspiration time during aspiration of a dead space, the aspiration is made more effective by determining the volume of the dead space to be aspired during an expiration, determining an expiration flow with respect to time during at least a latter part of the expiration, and optimizing the aspiration time and the aspiration flow from the determined volume of the dead space and the measured expiration flow with respect to time is such a way that the dead space can be aspirated during an ongoing expiration with a minimum of interference to the flow balance in the expiration flow as observed from a point upstream and/or downstream the dead space.

A mechanical breathing aid has first and second inlets respectively connectable to a source of air and a source of oxygen. A mixing location is in gaseous communication with the first and second inlets, at which controlled amounts of air and oxygen from the respective inlets are mixed. Method and arrangement for acoustic determination of moisture content of a gas mixture

In a calibration apparatus and method for a resistance thermometer a reference thermometer is located in thermal contact with a gas composition to generate, during a calibration period, a first reference temperature value for the gas composition at a first temperature, and an acoustic meter is located in acoustic contact with the gas composition and, during the calibration period, makes an acoustic velocity-related measurement for use in generating a second reference temperature value for the gas composition at a second temperature. A calibration unit coordinates the first and second reference temperature values with first and second measurement temperature values provided by the resistance thermometer at the first and the second temperatures, respectively, and establishes a calibration relationship therefrom.
