In a fishing reel having a line spool which is non-rotatable during casting, a line spreading device driven by the hand crank of the reel and comprising a cam mechanism including a cam member which is rotatable by the hand crank, a cam follower cooperating with said cam member, a pivotable arm connected to be pivoted by the cam follower, and a dog pivotally connected to the arm and connected to reciprocate the line spool, said cam member having a cam profile which together with the rotational speed of the cam member determines the pitch of the line when the line is wound on the line spool and the distribution of the line on the spool.

A fishing reel with a sliding clutch, in which the friction material is protected against overheating by streams of cooling air in order to increase its life and safety of function. One of the coupling disks is connected with a fan wheel carried by the spool.

This invention relates to a combined sliding clutch and slide signal mechanism in a transmission between a rotatable spool and a crank of a fishing reel, said sliding clutch and signal mechanism including a gear wheel connected so as to drive the spool, a disc fixed on a shaft driven by the crank and placed in spaced relationship to one side of said gear wheel, and a friction ring placed between annular surfaces of the two members constituted by said disc and said gear wheel, one of said members being adapted to be axially urged against said friction ring by controllable force exerted on the other member by adjusting means on the fishing reel to effect slidable coupling between said members via said friction ring, and a slide signal device constituted by cooperating slide signal producing means mounted in facing relationship on said members and adapted to produce slide signals when relative rotation occurs between said members and thus between said signal producing means, wherein said gear wheel, signal producing means and friction ring are arranged such that the friction ring is seated radially inwardly of the teeth of the gear wheel and radially outwardly of the circular path of said slide signal producing means on said members, thereby eliminating any tendency of said friction ring to interfere with the signal producing means.

This invention relates to spring means used in fishing reels for exerting resilient pressure on an element when a force is applied on the spring means, said spring means comprising a pair of first and second washers movably mounted in coaxial relationship in the fishing reel, said first washer being a domed spring washer having convex and concave sides with the concave side facing said element, said second washer having a substantially smaller diameter than said first washer and being mounted in a position between said element and the concave side of the first washer for dividing the total spring plane of the latter into two coaxial portions, whereby, when said washers are being pressed by a force against each other and against said element, said first washer is subjected to resilient deformation substantially in the portion thereof extending outwardly of the outer circumferential edge of said first washer, whereupon said first washer, when said force exceeds a predetermined value, is subjected to resilient deformation substantially in the portion thereof extending inwardly of the outer circumferential edge of said second washer.
