A method for detecting a deflection between a source module and a detection module in a scanning apparatus and configured as a sensor pair for scanning transmission measurement of sheet material being transported in a machine direction through a sensing gap formed between the source module and the detection module. The source module is arranged on a first side of the sensing gap and emits a sensing radiation or sensing energy radiation towards the sensing gap, and the detection module is arranged on a second side of the sensing gap opposite to the first side and detects the radiation from the source module and transmitted through the sensing gap. The method includes: attaching a removable blocking device to the detection module; and performing a partially-blocked scanning process during which the source module and the detection module are jointly moved in a cross direction of the scanning apparatus.

The invention is useful in conjunction with endoscopies and catherizations, such as urinary catherization, gastric and pulmonary endoscopies, and the like procedures. The process and device can also provide liquid flow and/or vision.

A simple surgical drape system of generally flat shape for male urology procedures that provides full isolation of top versus bottom surface by a sealing fenestration surrounding the meatus area. It is achieved by manually forming the flat drape to a tent-like shape around the penis with a fenestration aperture smaller than glans diameter, supported by and sealing to the glans tip, and then attaching a penile clamp to hold the drape. This allows a simplified safer antibacterial preparation and less chance of infection complications. The sealed design permits better management of urology liquids, and can use absorption pad on drape top side. The drape wrinkles act as a penile position stabilizer, reducing need for extended use of the one operator hand for penile support. Drape is removable with catheter in place.

Surgical drape system for urology procedures on male patients

A sheet making system that has two or more separated nodes one of which may be a scanner sensing head and the other of which may be a scanner end column. Each node has a wireless system and receives power from a common AC source. Each node receives events data associated with the wireless system. Each wireless system has a circuit that obtains from the common AC power source an associated events data acquisition clock that is the same for all of the wireless systems to time synchronize to each other the associated events data signals at each of the two or more nodes. A central computer may be connected to the two or more nodes. The communication between the computer and each of the two or more nodes can be wireless or by a LAN or other mechanisms.

There is described a method and apparatus for tracking the location of web features through a converting process, one application of which can involve tracking paper defects from a paper machine as detected by a camera system, to a winder where the sheet is wound to rolls so that the web defects can be repaired in the winder before making the rolls. The method to track web features is based on pattern identification of inherent sheet variability or defects. The apparatus involves two or more sheet property or defect monitoring web sensors arranged at the same cross directional location at different stages of the converting operation, augmented by tachometers and/or roll diameter sensors. A full automation system for drive control on the winder based on this information is preferably added to make maximum advantage of this information.

Accurate tracking of web features through converting processes

A sensor is provided that measures web caliper using optical and magnetic measuring devices. The optical measuring devices may employ a confocal chromatic aberration method to accurately determine the distance to the moving web and the magnetic devices may be ferrite core coil and target. Means of stabilizing a moving web are included for improving dynamic measurement accuracy.

Web measurement device

A method for measuring both caliper and tension of a web such as paper wound into a roll. The method may include a standard caliper sensor whose air supply is selectively modified to allow for both the measurement of caliper and tension of the web. In another embodiment two similar or identical measurement devices are installed in tandem where one device measures tension without pinching the sheet and the other device measures caliper. The sensor may include two sheet guides for providing support for tension measurement or one or both sheet guides can be eliminated by support from machinery rolls.

Measurement system for improved paper roll runnability

A dual sided sheet surface property sensor has the capability to simultaneously measure both sides of a moving sheet at the same location of the sheet on the top and bottom surfaces of the sheet. The energy directed to each side of the sheet may include UV, visible light, infrared, radio frequency, microwave, broadband, or X-ray. The sensor has a source and associated detector on each side of the moving sheet and each source provides energy at a different modulation frequency and the associated detector is responsive only to that frequency.

Independent measurement of dual sided properties of sheet material

A non-contact system for sensing a property of a passing web of material includes first and second sensors positioned on opposite sides of the web. The opposing sensors are repelled from the web and each other by gas bearings formed between the sensors and the web and attracted to each other by one or more polarized magnets embedded in the sensors. The resultant net force properly spaces the sensors from the web to ensure reliable and accurate sensing. The repelling force enables the sensors to react substantially instantaneously to changes in the pass line of the web. An automatic actuator/retractor can be provided to withdraw the sensors, extend the sensors to or retract the sensors from adjacent the feed path.

Non-contact sheet sensing system and related method

On-line measurement of fiber orientation and anisotropy in a non-woven web of material is performed by directing three light sources toward a sensing region of the web. Reflectively scattered light from each light source is detected by a pair of light sensors positioned on either side of an incidence plane including the beam of incident light. Back scattered light from each light source is also detected by at least one light sensor positioned generally above the sensing region. Preferably two back scattered light sensors are provided for each light source, one common light sensor and one dedicated light sensor. The signals from the light sensors for each of the light sources are combined to generate resultant fiber orientation signals which are used to compute a fiber orientation angle relative to the machine direction and an anisotropy characteristic for the web. The three light sources are modulated and the signals from the light sensors are synchronously demodulated such that light simultaneously incident on the sensing region is electrically separated to correspond to optical paths defined by the three light sources. The resulting signals define points on a generally elliptical polar distribution function of a resultant fiber orientation curve. The curve is approximated by an equation with the measured points being substituted into the equation to form a set of three equations with three unknowns which are then solved to determine the fiber orientation and anisotropy of the web being measured.

Pinch valves having a flexible, constrictable sleeve are used to control a dilution headbox for a paper making machine. A variety of pinch valves may be used in the present invention with the pinch valves being actuated by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure or by mechanically pinching the valves' sleeves by means of rams driven by stepper or linear drive motors. For pneumatic control, dynamic differential pressure drops are measured across the valves to determine flow rate through the valves. A pinch valve, referred to herein as a torsional pinch valve, is disclosed for dilution headbox control. In one form, a first end of a sleeve is fixedly mounted in a support frame and the second end of the sleeve is mounted for rotation in the frame. A driver rotates the second end of the sleeve such that a flow path through the sleeve is controlled. The flow path is a maximum when no torsion is placed on the sleeve and is reduced to substantially zero by sufficient rotation. In another form, first ends of two sleeves are secured into a support frame such that the sleeves are in axial alignment with one another. The second ends of the sleeves are secured to an annular collar or sleeve support member which is mounted for rotation between the fixedly mounted first ends. By rotating the annular collar, the cross section of the flow path is controlled.

Control of dilution lines in a dilution headbox of a paper making machine

A caliper measuring system is provided for determining the thickness of a moving sheet. The system comprises first and second caliper sensing heads having first and second sensing shoes positioned on opposite sides of the moving sheet for engaging the sheet. A gap sensor is associated with the first and second sensing shoes for generating distance signals representative of the distance between the first and second sensing shoes and for determining the thickness of the moving sheet based upon the distance signals. The gap sensor includes a processor which determines the thickness of the moving sheet from the distance signals, generates a count of lumps sensed in the moving web, and generates a baring profile representative of rapid thickness variations along the moving sheet in the direction of movement of the sheet.
