The invention relates to multi-layer oxide ceramic bodies and in particular to presintered multi-layer oxide ceramic blanks and oxide ceramic green bodies suitable for dental applications. These bodies can be thermally densified by further sintering without distortion and are thus particularly suitable for the manufacture of dental restorations. The invention also relates to a process for the manufacture of such multi-layer oxide ceramic bodies as well as to a process for the manufacture of dental restorations using the multi-layer oxide ceramic bodies.

Controlling of sintering kinetics of oxide ceramics

Zirconia dental ceramics exhibiting opalescence and having a grain size in the range of 10 nm to 300 nm, a density of at least 99.5% of theoretical density, a visible light transmittance at or higher than 45% at 560 nm, and a strength of at least 800 MPa.

Nanocrystalline zirconia and methods of processing thereof

A dental article includes yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic, and no more than about 0.15 wt. % of one or more coloring agents of one or more of: Pr, Tb, Cr, Nd, Co, oxides thereof, and combinations thereof, whereby the dental article is provided with a color corresponding to a natural tooth shade; and wherein the dental article has a flexural strength of at least about 800 MPa. Corresponding methods are also described.

Shaded zirconium oxide articles and methods

Methods of forming a colored ceramic body or dental article are described that include: (a) forming a body from a ceramic-containing powder; (b) shaping the body into a desired shape; and (c) firing the shaped body in an atmosphere comprising at least one coloring agent. Methods of forming a fully dense ceramic body that lacks discoloration, are also described which include: (a) forming a body from a ceramic-containing powder; (b) shaping the body into a desired shape; (c) placing the shaped body in a firing atmosphere containing at least one impurity that promote discoloration of the ceramic body; (d) placing the ceramic body in proximity to an atmosphere powder; and (e) firing the shaped body in proximity to an atmosphere powder; wherein the atmosphere powder acts as at least one of a barrier and a getter for the at least one impurity.
