An energy storage device is provided that includes a separator having a first surface and a second surface. The first surface defines at least a portion of a cathodic chamber, and the second surface defines an anodic chamber. The cathodic chamber includes an alkali metal halide that forms an ion that is capable of conducting through the separator. The anodic chamber has a volume that is filled with a consumable fluid. The amount of the consumable fluid is greater than 90 percent by volume of the anodic chamber volume. Furthermore, the consumable fluid is reactive with an ionic species of the alkali metal halide. A method of sealing the energy storage device is also provided.

Energy storage device and associated method

There is provided a system and method for controlling an electronic device. An exemplary method comprises employing a look-up table to derive waveform value data for a multi-phase reference waveform. The exemplary method also comprises employing the look-up table to derive waveform value data corresponding to harmonic data for the multi-phase reference waveform. Harmonic data is injected into the multi-phase reference waveform to produce a harmonic reference waveform. The exemplary method additionally comprises generating a plurality of control signals from the harmonic reference waveform.

Electronic device control system and method

A system and method are provided for battery control of hybrid vehicles such as, but not limited to, hybrid locomotives. The system and method are implemented to sense a present state of charge (SoC) of one or more batteries and generate present SoC data there from, sense a present excursion defined by a relationship represented as maximum SoC&#x2212;minimum SoC for a desired cycle and generate present excursion data there from, and control the one or more battery power/current charging limits in response to the present SoC data and the present excursion data.

System and method for battery control

A protection system for a power distribution system with one or more zones that includes at least one power-switching device connected to a power or current sensing device and a communications device. The power-switching device is communicatively coupled to at least one processing device. The at least one processing device is adapted to execute a plurality of protective functions for a zone based on information of power conditions within the zone and predetermined protective requirements of the zone.

Circuit protection system

A method of protecting a circuit having power switching devices that includes communicating a current in at least one secondary switching device to at least one master switching device and determining a presence of a fault condition within at least a first zone based at least in part upon characteristics of the current in the at least one secondary switching device communicated to the at least one master switching device to perform differential protection.

A method for driving a DC motor includes generating a first voltage pulse, based on a pre-determined speed input and duty cycle, and configured to generate motor current of reference current value sufficient to achieve a desired speed according to the speed input. Subsequent pulses of the voltage are generated to maintain the current substantially within a range of the reference current. Another method includes sensing and comparing motor current to reference current value and generating an error signal therebetween, which is integrated over time to generate an integrated current error, which is compared with a reference pulse. Thereafter generating applied voltage pulses configured to: switch at each instance of the integrated current error exceeding or becoming less than the reference pulse value; generate a motor current sufficient to achieve a desired speed according to a pre-determined speed input; and having substantially zero average variation from the reference current.

Method and apparatus for driving a brushless direct current motor

A method of reducing torque ripple and noise for an brushless DC machine comprising: determining a control frequency for the electric machine, the control frequency indicative of an existing current command to and a rotational velocity of the electric machine; multiplying the control frequency by a selected multiple and forming a modulating signal responsive thereto; and formulating a modified command profile. The method also includes: correlating and synchronizing the modified command profile with the existing current command and a rotor position for the electric machine; and generating a modulated current command to the electric machine.
