Provided herein is a unique process that prepares a saturated hydrocarbon mixture with well-controlled structural characteristics that address the performance requirements driven by the stricter environmental and fuel economy regulations for automotive engine oils. The process allows for the branching characteristics of the hydrocarbon molecules to be controlled so as to consistently provide a composition that has a surprising CCS viscosity at &#x2212;35&#xb0; C. (ASTM D5329) and Noack volatility (ASTM D5800) relationship. The process comprises providing a specific olefinic feedstock, oligomerizing in the presence of a BFcatalyst, and hydroisomerizing in the presence of a noble-metal impregnated, 10-member ring zeolite catalyst.

Process for preparing hydrocarbon mixture exhibiting unique branching structure

Provided herein are hydrocarbon mixtures with controlled structure characteristics that address the performance requirements for finished lubricants driven by the stricter environmental and fuel economy regulations. The branching characteristics of the hydrocarbon molecules are controlled to provide a composition that has a unique and superior viscosity-temperature relationship and Noack volatility. An important aspect of the present invention relates to a saturated hydrocarbon mixture with at least 80% of the molecules having an even carbon number, with the branching characteristic of BP/BI in the range&#x2265;&#x2212;0.6037 (Internal alkyl branching)+2.0, where on average at least 0.3 to 1.5 of the internal methyl branches are located more than 4 carbons away from the terminal carbon when analyzed by carbon NMR. The saturated hydrocarbon mixture with such unique branching structure consistently exhibits a stand out performance in the cold crank simulated viscosity (CCS) vs Noack volatility relationship, which allows for the formulation of lower viscosity engine oils with improved fuel economies.

Disclosed is a method for generating a site specific model for predicting TPH concentration in soil. The method includes dividing a plurality of soil samples taken from a field site into two sets of samples. One set is analyzed using GC-FID, and the other set is analyzed using a handheld FTIR spectrometer with an ATR window to obtain FTIR-ATR absorbance data. Partial least squares regression analysis is used to correlate the GC-FID TPH concentration data with the absorbance data to generate a calibration model. The model is validated with soil samples having unknown TPH concentration. The model is used to predict the TPH concentration of soil samples taken from the field site analyzed using the handheld Fourier transform-infrared spectrometer to obtain FTIR-ATR absorbance data for the soil samples. During all absorbance measurements, each of the soil samples has a moisture content of 1 to 30 wt % and each sample is pressed against the ATR window with sufficient pressure to ensure intimate contact between the sample and the window.

Method for predicting total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration in soils

A method of estimating the relative concentration of at least two components contained in a mixture of the components is disclosed. At least two mixtures are produced by combining the at least two components, each of the at least two mixtures having different concentrations of the at least two components. NIR mixture spectra are acquired from each of the at least two mixtures. The NIR component spectra and the NIR mixture spectra are input into a computer utilizing chemometrics software and the spectra are analyzed to produce a calibration model for each component and each of the mixture NIR spectra. NIR monitored spectra for a monitored mixture of the components having an unknown concentration of the components is acquired. The calibration models are applied to the NIR monitored spectra to thereby estimate the concentration of at least one of the components in the monitored mixture.

Method and system for NIR spectroscopy of mixtures to evaluate composition of components of the mixtures

A core sample holder assembly for performing a laboratory magnetic resonance measurement of a core sample taken from a hydrocarbon containing formation is provided. The assembly comprises a pressure chamber provided by a hull and one or more flanges are sealingly coupled with the hull. A flexible core sample holder sleeve is arranged within the pressure chamber and is sealingly coupled with at least one of the flanges. An overburden fluid injection port is in fluid communication with an annular space between the hull and the flexible sleeve and is configured to inject overburden fluid into an annular space between the hull and the flexible sleeve. A pressure regulator is configured to maintain the overburden fluid in the annular space at an elevated pressure. A radio-frequency antenna, within the pressure chamber and wrapped around the sample holder sleeve, is configured to receive an electromagnetic-signal from the core sample. In use, the core sample is arranged substantially within the sleeve.

A process for producing a jet fuel, comprising contacting an olefin and an isoparaffin with an unsupported catalyst system comprising an ionic liquid catalyst and a halide containing additive in an alkylation zone under alkylation conditions to make an alkylate product, and recovering the jet fuel from the alkylate product, wherein the jet fuel has a NMR branching index greater than 60 and meets the boiling point, flash point, smoke point, heat of combustion, and freeze point requirements for Jet A-1 fuel. Also a process for producing a jet fuel, comprising providing a feed produced in a FC cracker comprising olefins, mixing the feed with an isoparaffin, alkylating the mixed feed in an ionic liquid alkylation zone, and separating the jet fuel from the alkylated product.

Process for producing a jet fuel having a high NMR branching index

A middle distillate, comprising hydrocarbons having a boiling range between 150&#xb0; C. and 350&#xb0; C., a NMR branching index greater than 60, and a CH/CHhydrogen ratio greater than 2.6. Also, there is provided the middle distillate made by a process compressing alkylating an isoparaffin with an olefin under alkylation conditions over an unsupported ionic liquid catalyst, and providing an amount of halide containing additive to the alkylating step to achieve the NMR branching index and the CH/CHhydrogen ratio.

A process for producing a middle distillate or a middle distillate blending component, comprising contacting a feed comprising an olefin, an isoparaffin, and less than 5 wt % oligomerized olefin, in an ionic liquid alkylation zone with an acidic haloaluminate ionic liquid, at alkylation conditions; and recovering an effluent comprising an alkylated product that has greater than 35 vol % C10+ and less than 1 vol % C55+. A separated middle distillate has greater than 30 vol % C10+, less than 1 vol % C55+, and a cloud point less than &#x2212;50&#xb0; C.

We also provide a process comprising alkylating isobutane and butene in the presence of specific chloroaluminate ionic liquid catalysts, to produce a jet fuel.

A process for producing a low volatility gasoline blending component and a middle distillate, comprising alkylating a hydrocarbon stream comprising at least one olefin having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and at least one paraffin having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms with an ionic liquid catalyst and an unsupported halide containing additive, and separating the alkylate into at least the low volatility gasoline blending component and the middle distillate, wherein the middle distillate is a fuel suitable for use as a jet fuel or jet fuel blending component.
