Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for controlling a hydraulic fracturing job. Systems and methods are provided for receiving diagnostics data of a hydraulic fracturing completion of a wellbore, accessing a fracture formation model that models formation characteristics of fractures formed through the wellbore into a formation surrounding the wellbore during the hydraulic fracture completion with respect to surface variables of the hydraulic fracturing completion, selecting one or more subsurface objective functions from a plurality of subsurface objective functions for changing one or more of the formation characteristics of the fractures, and applying the fracture formation model based on the diagnostics data to determine values of the surface variables for controlling the formation characteristics of the fractures to converge on the one or more subsurface objective functions.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems, methods, and computer-readable media for controlling a hydraulic fracturing job. Diagnostics data of a hydraulic fracturing completion of a wellbore can be received. A fracture formation model that models formation characteristics of fractures formed through the wellbore into a formation surrounding the wellbore during the hydraulic fracturing completion with respect to surface variables can be accessed. A subsurface objective function of fracture complexity can be selected from a plurality of subsurface objective functions for changing one or more of the formation characteristics of the fractures. The fracture formation model can be applied based on the diagnostics data to determine values of the surface variables for controlling the formation characteristics of the fractures to converge on the subsurface objective function of fracture complexity. As follows, a fracture completion plan can be formed based on the values of the surface variables.

Fracture complexity operation control

Methods and systems for monitoring and controlling a hydraulic fracturing operation to generate a real-time treatment plan are provided. The methods of the present disclosure include providing a treatment fluid; introducing the treatment fluid into a wellbore penetrating at least a first portion of a subterranean formation at or above a pressure sufficient to create or enhance one or more formation entry points in the subterranean formation; measuring one or more properties of the treatment fluid or downhole conditions within the subterranean formation; creating a treatment plan substantially in real-time including one or more plans selected from the group consisting of: a proppant placement plan, a fluid placement plan, a completion plan, and any combination thereof, wherein the treatment plan is based at least partially on the one or more properties of the treatment fluid or downhole conditions; and treating at least the first portion of the subterranean formation in accordance with the treatment plan.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for controlling a hydraulic fracturing job. A fracturing completion model can be applied to identify a plurality of possible fracturing completion plans for completing one or more wellbores at a target completion. The plurality of possible fracturing completion plans can include varying values of fracturing completion parameters and/or reservoir parameters. Completion characteristic data of the one or more wellbores can be gathered in response to application of at least a portion of a fracturing completion plan of the possible fracturing completion plans. Further, the completion characteristic data can be used to determine whether to apply a different fracturing completion plan of the possible fracturing completion plans. In turn, if it is determined to apply the different fracturing completion plan, then the method can include facilitating switching to the different fracturing completion plan in completing the one or more wellbores.

Methods of ranking formation stabilizer performance are described. The methods include obtaining drill cuttings from a subterranean formation, grinding and sieving the drill cuttings to a particle size larger than 200 mesh, adding a formation stabilizer solution to the ground and sieved drill cuttings to form a mixture, agitating the mixture, and measuring turbidity of the agitated mixture.

A method of treating a subterranean formation including suspending proppant particulates in a treatment fluid, wherein the proppant particles include a coating comprising a salt-tolerant, water-swellable polymer, and the treatment fluid includes at least one fluid consisting of fresh water, salt water, seawater, brine, an aqueous salt solution, and combinations thereof; and introducing the treatment fluid containing the settling retardant proppant particulates into the subterranean formation. A composite proppant particle includes a proppant substrate and a salt tolerant polymeric layer deposited on the proppant substrate.

Method of selecting an optimum formation stabilization treatment for subterranean formations is described. The methods include obtaining formation material, adding a test fluid to the formation material to form a first mixture, adding the test fluid to the formation material to form a second mixture, agitating the first and second mixtures, measuring capillary suction time of the first mixture, and measuring turbidity of the second mixture.

Evaluating surfactants for use in downhole applications, especially surfactants with similar surface tension or interfacial tension values and wetting properties, may be achieved with a sensitive column test using a non-uniform particulate media therein. An exemplary method may include providing a column containing two types of particles that differ by at least one of: a mean particle diameter, a sphericity, and a chemical composition. Surfactant samples may be individually tested by passing the sample through the column followed by a displacement fluid, typically an oleaginous. The displacement rate and volume of the surfactant sample may be used to assess the surfactant's suitability for downhole applications.

Methods of creating variably tacky proppants and providing such proppants into a subterranean formation are provided. The variably tacky proppants can be non-tacky at a first set of conditions and tacky at a second set of conditions. As such, the variably tacky proppants can be pumped into a subterranean formation and caused to enter fractures in the formation while the proppants are non-tacky. Subsequently, natural or induced conditions in the well bore can cause the proppants to become tacky. The tacky proppants inhibit the movement of proppants in the fractures when pressure is reduced in the formation and inhibit the migration of fines towards the wellbore.
