The present invention provides methods, systems, and computer program instructions for enabling a variety of devices, particularly low-power hand-held devices, to travel seamlessly through a networking environment such as that encountered within a building by establishing connectivity to a plurality of network access points. The illusion of seamless network connectivity is provided by having these access points coordinate with a core server to perform user authentication, device address assignment, and handoff services.

The present invention provides methods, systems, and computer program instructions for providing location-independent packet routing and secure access in a wireless networking environment (such as that encountered within a building), enabling client devices to travel seamlessly within the environment. Each client device uses a constant address. An address translation process that is transparent to the client and server is automatically performed as the device roams through the environment, enabling efficient client migration from one supporting access point to another. The secure access techniques provide user-centric authentication and allow policy-driven packet filtering, while taking advantage of encryption capabilities that are built in to the hardware at each endpoint.

The invention provides the mechanism, hereinafter referred to as Flexible Dynamic Partitioning (FDP), to allocate and reallocate resources among scheduling schemes of many types for multicomputing environments. Resources can include, but are not limited to, processors, disks and communications connections. Partitioning of resources can be initiated by both application and system triggers. Once dynamic partitioning is triggered, FDP allows a partition to invoke a set of resource allocation functions associated with its partition. The reallocation function performs a set of resource matchings and determine the necessary resource movement among partitions.

A system and method whereby a gang scheduling entity assembles a schedule of application tasks to be run on a plurality of distributed parallel processors for pre-set time intervals. The scheduling information, including an ordered set of applications and the length of the time interval, are provided to each of the node level schedulers for the relevant processors, and the node level schedulers assure that the tasks of the applications are executed, with context switching between tasks being controlled at the node level. Tasks from multiple applications can be scheduled simultaneously, with time sharing and space sharing being utilized in the schedule. The inventive system is dynamically scalable, with the gang scheduling entity restructuring the matrix schedule should dynamic re-partitioning result in addition or deletion of processors.

A method, system, and computer-readable code for using a cellular phone as a network gateway in an automotive network. The proposed technique defines a novel way for using the phone's protocol stack and transmission capabilities (together with an adapter) to enable devices on a network in a vehicle to communicate with an external network, while still allowing the phone to work in &ldquo;stand-alone&rdquo; mode (i.e. not connected to the vehicle network) where it can communicate to a remote computer as a network client. Further, while the phone is plugged into the automotive network, it retains the ability to operate as a first-class network client. Devices in the vehicle no longer need to include transmission capabilities, thereby reducing their cost. The vehicle owner no longer needs to have a separate wireless subscription for both the phone and the automotive network devices, reducing costs even further.
