A dual modem automatically switches between a wireless and wire-based communication modes using mode selection circuitry that detects when a wire-based communications network, such as a standard land-line telephone network, is coupled to the modem. When the modem selection circuitry detects the presence of the wire-based communications network, it couples modem processing circuitry to a wire-based interface. When the modem selection circuitry fails to detect the presence of the wire-based communications network, it couples the modem processing circuitry to a wireless interface and the wireless interface is also powered for coupling to a wireless communications network, such as a cellular phone network. The wireless interface is not powered when the modem is coupled to the wire-based communications network.

A computer peripheral combines an electro-magnetic transceiver and a computer pointing device in the same housing, The pointing device cable provides the electrical connection between the electro-magnetic transceiver and the computer's data bus. The transceiver receives information in the form of electro-magnetic pulses from an appropriately-equipped remote device, converts the pulses to electrical signals, and relays the electrical signals to the computer. The transceiver receives electrical signals addressed to the device from the computer, converts the electrical signals to electro-magnetic pulses, and relays the pulses to the remote device.

A computer system having a removable component, such as a removable hard disk drive, and an electromechanical switch that mechanically locks and releases the component. The switch also generates an electrical signal when the component is released. At this point, before the component is physically removed, the central processing unit ('CPU') of the computer executes software that causes the computer system to save what information is necessary for recovery and suspend the system. When the system resumes, the CPU determines whether the component was replaced and, if so, causes an appropriate message to be displayed. The user then may select whether to reset the system or to resume.
