An apparatus and method for a dynamically extensible virtual switch. An apparatus or virtual switch includes at least one router and a data structure. The router utilizes the data structure to organize a connection between one or more virtual network interface cards (VNICs) to form a virtual network. The virtual switch also identifies a VNIC node of a data frame by its unique identifier, utilizes the unique identifier to index a collection of elements to retrieve a pointer to a virtual network head, and forwards the data frame to all VNIC nodes in a VNIC node listing associated with the virtual network head except for a VNIC node that relates to the unique identifier.

Apparatus and method for a dynamically extensible virtual switch

An access point receives a notification (or advertisement) from a device, which lacks a service. The access point adds the service to the notification, and forwards the notification to other devices on the network. Upon receiving from a control point a request to use the added service, the access point provides the service on behalf of the device.

An apparatus and method for acquiring Internet real-time media channels in a private network. The method includes receiving a service advertisement from a media channel server. The media channel server acts as a gateway between one or more channel service providers and a plurality of rendering devices on a private network. A subscription identifier (ID) and a URI (Universal Resource Identifier) are sent to the media channel server to enable the media channel server to request Internet channel information from one or more channel service providers. If the subscription identifier (ID) is validated by the one or more channel service providers, the Internet channel information is provided from the one or more channel service providers via the media channel server. The Internet channel information is provided to a user for enabling the user to browse the Internet channel information and request media content found on at least one Internet channel to be rendered on at least one of the plurality of rendering devices.

Nodes on a wide area network ('WAN') such as the Internet may communicate with multiple Internet Protocol Version 6 ('IPv6') nodes on a private network despite the lack of domain name service (&#x201c;DNS&#x201d;) server support. The nodes on the private network may obtain router advertisements and utilize this information to generate IPv6 addresses (6-to-4 addresses). A detection process may detect these IPv6 addresses and create web pages including these addresses. When the nodes on the WAN attempt to reach the private nodes using an address of the gateway separating the WAN from the private network, the nodes may instead reach the web pages created by the detection process. These web pages may redirect the nodes to communicate with each of the private nodes using their respective IPv6 addresses.

Accessing a private network includes receiving a request from a device across a public network at a first network component to establish a connection between the device and a private network and determining if the device is authorized to connect with the private network. Embodiments of the present invention relate to a network of peer-to-peer communication devices controlled by a central controller. Using respective peer-to-peer communication devices, users can submit customized program schedules to the central controller, for media broadcasts that the users wish to record and view at a later time. The central controller maintains a global schedule of individual user-entered program schedules, and directs the peer-to-peer communication devices to record and re-play the content as requested in the schedules. The requested content may be recorded locally by any peer-to-peer communication device and transmitted upon request to a different peer-to-peer communication device of the network.

Method and system for customized television viewing using a peer-to-peer network

The invention relates to a system and method to allow a remote client to remotely access a home server of a home or private network while preserving end-to-end security. A home server includes a service component. When a server application performs a network operation to start listening for a connection from a remote client, it is detected by the service component. The remote client is coupled through the Internet and through an Internet agent to a home gateway running a Network Address Translation (NAT) software program. The gateway connects to a forwarding agent. The forwarding agent is connected to the home server and provides the Internet agent with access parameters received from the home server. If the remote client provides proper access parameters to the Internet agent, the Internet agent provides the remote client access to services running on the home server.
