An automated handling machine for bills and securities which automatically processes bills and securities such as checks in the same apparatus. Sheets set in a bill depositing/dispensing mechanism are conveyed at a bill reading speed vin a first processing mode, and when they are passed through a discriminator for bills and checks, each sheet is discriminated whether it is a bill or check. If the sheet is a bill, it is subjected to authentication discrimination, denomination discrimination and validity discrimination, and temporarily stored in a temporary stocker. If the sheet is a check, it is temporarily returned to a deposit/withdrawal port and temporarily stored there. Then in a second processing mode, the temporarily stored check is conveyed to the discriminator at a check reading speed v(v&#x3c;v). MICR characters described on the check are read with high accuracy with a magnetic sensor of the discriminator, and contents of description on the check are obtained as image data by an image sensor, and recognition is performed on the data.
