Hard tooling for consolidation of a workpiece there between is preserved for reuse by disposing between the tooling and a workpiece a plurality of distinct, superimposed sacrificial sheets, for example metal foils, to isolate the workpiece from the tooling. The sacrificial sheets are substantially non-adherent one to another; and a sheet in contact with a workpiece surface is substantially chemically non-reactive with such workpiece surface.

Reusable hard tooling for article consolidation and consolidation method

A stiffened composite is provided exhibiting multi-directional reinforcement with continuous long fibers. The composite has a substrate and serpentine stiffeners adhered thereto. The stiffeners merge toward, join with and diverge from adjacent stiffeners to provide a stiffener matrix on the substrate. The serpentine stiffener permit the matrix to exhibit multi-directional reinforcement with the continuous long fibers within the serpentine ribs. The composite structures are useful as aircraft bypass ducts, and as other composite products.

Stiffened composite structures and method of making thereof

Vibrations within ceramic matrix and metal matrix composite materials are controlled by applying an excitation voltage to an array of piezoelectric actuators mounted to the surface of such materials. The actuators are driven in response to the phase shift of monochromatic light transmitted through a grid of optical fibers embedded within the composite materials. Applications include active vibration suppression, de-icing, and on-line structural integrity monitoring.
