A passive entry system for a vehicle includes a portable fob and a communication and control unit disposed on the vehicle, the communication and control unit configured to control a function of the vehicle. The portable fob and the communication and control unit are configured to communicate ultra-wideband (UWB) signals therebetween. When the function of the vehicle is triggered, the communication and control unit initiates a double-sided UWB ranging session with the portable fob where (i) the portable fob determines a first distance between the portable fob and the communication and control unit, and (ii) the communication and control unit determines a second distance between the portable fob and the communication and control unit. The communication and control unit is configured to prevent control of the function of the vehicle if a final distance, determined from the first and second distances, is greater than the predetermined distance.

Vehicle passive entry protocol with ultra wide band ranging

Disclosed is a method and system for selecting a target base station for handover of a wireless communication device, where the selecting is based at least in part on a consideration of the target base station's typical control-plane signaling latency in a core network, and particularly based on a comparison of control-plane signaling duration of multiple candidate target base stations. For instance, where all of the base stations are configured to engage in a particular control-plane signaling transaction from time to time, at issue could be which of the candidate target base stations typically engages in that control-plane signaling transaction the quickest.

Control of handover based on past duration of control-plane signaling

A passive entry system of a vehicle includes relay attack prevention. The passive entry system includes a control module in the vehicle, at least one antenna at the vehicle and a key fob. A predetermined number of signals are transmitted via the at least one antenna with each signal having a different power strength. The key fob is determines a power strength of each signal that the key fob receives and generates a measurement report to transmit to the control module. The control module is configured to determine whether the measurement report contains received signal strength indicators for at least half of the predetermined number of signals and whether the received signal strength indicator for each signal contained in the measurement report correlates to the power strength of that signal as transmitted by the at least one antenna.

Passive entry system of a vehicle having relay attack prevention

Disclosed is a method and system for compensating for excessive attenuation on an RF connection between a remote radio head (RRH) and an antenna of cell site. In an example configuration, in which first and second RF carriers of a cell site traverse different RF paths between respective RRHs and respective antenna, the second RF carrier may be subject to more attenuation than the first. Consequently, antenna transmission power of the second RF carrier may be below one or another threshold. For communication services to user equipment devices that involve both the first and second RF carriers, the diminished antenna transmission power of the second RF carrier may cause service degradation. In accordance with example embodiments, a controlling network entity may determine that the power is diminished, and responsively reallocate transmission power from an underutilized carrier to the second carrier, thereby boosting its transmission power and remediating service degradation.

Radio transmit power adjustment based on multiple radio frequency paths and sources of insertion loss

Disclosed are methods and systems for selection of a handover target for a user equipment device (UE). In particular, a wireless communication system may serve the UE over an air interface connection between the UE and a source base station (BS). While the system serves the UE, the system may make a selection of a handover target for the UE. And in accordance with the disclosure, the selection may be based at least in part on the handover target not having a wireless relay backhaul connection. Once the system selects the handover target using the disclosed approach, the system may then trigger handover of the UE from being served by the source BS to being served by the selected handover target.

Selection of a handover target based at least on a determination that the selected handover target does not have a wireless relay backhaul connection

A first Mobility Management Entity (MME) receives a tracking area update from the User Equipment (UE) indicating a first tracking area for the wireless relay that serves the UE and indicating a second tracking area for the evolved NodeB (eNodeB) that serves the wireless relay. The first MME determines if the first tracking area and the second tracking area are different responsive to the tracking area update, and if the first tracking area and the second tracking area are different, then determines if the wireless relay is controlled by a second MME that also controls the eNodeB. If the wireless relay is not controlled by the second MME that also controls the eNodeB, then the first MME transfers UE context data to the second MME that serves the eNodeB. The second MME selects the Serving Gateway (S-GW) for the UE based on the second tracking area for the eNodeB.

Long term evolution (LTE) network selection of a serving gateway (S-GW)

A wireless base station controls User Equipment (UE) where a wireless repeater chain repeats wireless signaling between the UE and the wireless base station. The wireless base station receives the wireless signaling transferred by the UE and determines signaling latency between the UE and the wireless base station. The wireless base station processes the signaling latency to determine a wireless repeater hop count between the UE and the wireless base station. The wireless repeater hop count indicates a number of wireless repeaters in the wireless repeater chain that repeat between the UE and the wireless base station. The wireless base station determines a UE instruction based on the wireless repeater hop count. The wireless base station transfers the UE instruction to the UE over the wireless repeater chain.

Wireless communication network to control radio frequency (RF) measurement reporting for user equipment

A wireless communication device (WCD) can communicate with either a first radio access network (RAN) that uses a packet-switched network under the control of a call server for voice calls, or a second RAN that uses a circuit-switched network for voice calls. When served by the first RAN, the WCD determines whether it should be served by a relay base station of the first RAN (a base station that has a wireless backhaul to a donor base station), a non-relay base station of the first RAN, or a base station of the second RAN, by measuring a communication latency with the call server. If the latency is greater than a threshold latency for voice calls, the WCD initiates a handover to a non-relay base station (if served by a relay base station) or to a base station of the second RAN (if served by a non-relay base station).

Method and apparatus for latency-based selection of serving base station

A data communication system pre-registers User Equipment (UE) to a Long Term Evolution (LTE) tracking area in an LTE network before the UE attaches to the LTE network. A voice communication network receives a release message for a user voice session and responsively transfers a pre-attachment message to an MME in the LTE network comprising a UE Identifier (ID), a serving base station ID, and an indication that the UE will attach to the LTE network. The MME processes the base station ID to select an LTE network Physical Cell Identity (PCI), processes the LTE network PCI to select an LTE tracking area, and pre-registers the UE ID to the selected LTE tracking area. An LTE base station receives an attachment request from the UE based on the LTE network PCI and responsively attaches the UE to the LTE network without performing a tracking area update.

Pre-registration of a wireless communication device in a long term evolution network

Disclosed is a method and system to help manage latency and reduce unnecessary signaling in setup of fallback communications, such as circuit switched fallback calls for instance, by taking into account the load in various fallback coverage areas. When the load of a fallback coverage area is threshold high, signaling may pass to a serving network to cause that fallback coverage area to be filtered out of a list of fallback coverage areas that a base station of the serving network would provide to a served device, so as to help avoid having the device scan for coverage of that fallback coverage area.

Use of fallback coverage area load to manage fallback communication setup

A wireless relay wirelessly receives user data from User Equipment (UE) using a UE uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA) configuration. The wireless relay wirelessly transfers the user data using a relay uplink. The wireless relay determines available Power Headroom (PHR) for the relay uplink and translates the available PHR into a new UE uplink CA configuration. The wireless relay wirelessly receives additional user data from the UE using the new UE uplink CA configuration.

Wireless communication system control of uplink carrier aggregation

A wireless communication network to control Radio Frequency (RF) measurement reporting for User Equipment (UE). A wireless base station receives initial wireless data transferred by the UE. The wireless base station processes wireless data from the UE to detect a repeater chain repeating the wireless data between the UE and the wireless base station and to determine a wireless signal metric. The wireless base station processes the wireless signal metric based on the detection of the repeater chain to select a new RF measurement reporting frequency for the UE. The wireless base station transfers an instruction to the UE indicating the new RF measurement reporting frequency and receives subsequent wireless data transferred by the UE using the new RF measurement reporting frequency.

A method is disclosed to help register a UE with a different network in the event of an unsuccessful registration with a fallback network. In accordance with the disclosure, a UE may be registered on a first network and may then seek to register with a second network via the first network. The first network may attempt to register the UE with the second network, but the attempt to register the UE with the second network may ultimately fail. In response to such failure, the first network may discontinue providing service to the UE. Discontinuing the providing of service to the UE on the first network may result in the UE seeking to register directly with the second network or with a different network. By registering directly with the second network, or a different network, the UE may be able to initiate and/or receive voice calls via that network.

Multiple-network registration process

A method and system for controlling a circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) process is disclosed. A first wireless network serving a wireless communication device (WCD) receives from an interworking server an indication of an incoming call that the WCD can receive via a second wireless network. The first wireless network sends the interworking server an indication of a location related to the WCD. The interworking server determines a load level of the second wireless network in an area proximate the indicated location. The interworking server selects a control message based on the load level and sends the selected control message to the first wireless network. The first wireless network determines whether to transition the WCD to the second wireless network to receive the incoming call based on the selected control message from the interworking server.

Method and system for controlling a circuit-switched fallback process

Disclosed is a method and corresponding system for managing CSFB pre-registration. A first network serving a UE releases the UE from being served by the first network and redirects the UE to transition from being served by the first network to being served by a second network. The first network then detects that the UE has returned to be served by the first network. In response to detecting the return of the UE, and based on the previous releasing and redirecting of the UE, the first network then initiates a pre-registration of the UE with the second network to inform the second network that the UE is now reachable via the first network.
