This disclosure is directed to allocation of one or more radio bands to a user equipment (UE) for establishing a radio link with a radio node (e.g., eNodeB or gNodeB). The radio bands may include a shared band, such as citizens band radio service (CBRS), a primary licensed band, such as the B66 band, and/or an unlicensed band, such as B46 band. A radio communications system may consider a variety of parameters associated with the distance of a UE from a radio node, signal strength of a signal from the UE, the services requested by the UE, and/or spectral availability of the each of the radio bands to determine which radio band(s) to allocate to the UE. In some cases, the radio band allocated to a UE may be dynamically changed by the radio communications system as conditions related to the UE and/or the mobile network change.

Multi-band radio allocation for mobile networks

Techniques for monitoring and configuring a mesh network are discussed herein. A centralized database may receive, from one or more access points that make up the mesh network, conditions data associated with the access points and the backhaul links between the access points. The centralized database may determine a radio frequency (RF) resource that should be used for the backhaul links to optimize the mesh network and send an instruction to the access point to operate using the RF resource.

Mesh network augmentation of cellular connections

Techniques are discussed herein for providing wireless backhaul using relay nodes in a cellular network. Using techniques described herein, the higher frequency bands available in 5G networks are utilized to provide both wireless backhaul links and access links. A mesh of wireless nodes, such as Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) nodes can be utilized to provide wireless backhaul links and access links in a 5G network. One or more relay nodes may be wirelessly coupled to a base station node, such as gNodeB, that includes a wired connection to the core network. The wireless backhaul extends coverage to user equipment (UE) that are not directly connected to a gNodeB base station. The allocation and scheduling of bandwidth may be determined by the relay nodes (i.e., IABs) and/or the wired nodes (i.e., gNodeBs).

Wireless backhaul using relay nodes in a cellular network

In a cellular communication system, particularly in a system using GHz frequencies, communication signals may become blocked by physical objects. As a result, communications may be disrupted or prevented. In a cellular system using beamforming and directional signal beams, a beam is tested prior to its use by sending a discovery signal over the beam, and by detecting any reflections of the discovery signal. A reflection may indicate the presence of a blocking object in the direction of the beam. By repeating this process using different directional beams, it is possible to produce a map of an area surrounding the base station, and to subsequently select or configure a directional beam for communicating with an individual user device. The process may also be used when selecting the antenna position and orientation for a new base station, by testing different alternatives and selecting an alternative that has relatively fewer blocking obstructions.

Object detection for beamforming configuration and coverage optimization

Techniques for identifying wireless transmission opportunities that are made available by beamforming is provided. In addition to identifying frequency bands and time divisions that are available for transmitting radio signals, beamforming capabilities of communications systems are used to identify a spatial direction that is available for transmitting radio signals in a particular frequency band. A spectrum management tool identifies the available spatial directions, frequency bands, and time divisions for transmission in a dynamic spectrum sharing environment, and a radio transmitting device is configured by the tool to transmit in the identified available spatial directions, frequency bands, and time divisions.

Dynamic spectrum sharing

An interactive spectrum management tool that provides comprehensive information on wireless spectrum bands of a radio spectrum is provided. The tool assists in determining whether a frequency band in the spectrum is available for wireless transmission at any particular place and time by gathering, analyzing, and presenting comprehensive information about the frequency band. The comprehensive information includes different types of information regarding the allocation, regulation, ownership, and use of the frequency band. The tool extracts and analyzes the different types of allocation and usage information from different databases that are maintained by various different public and private agencies at international, national, and local levels.
