In one aspect, coated cutting tools are described herein which, in some embodiments, can demonstrate improved wear resistance in one or more cutting applications. In some embodiments, a coated cutting tool described herein comprises a substrate and a coating adhered to the substrate, the coating comprising an inner layer deposited by physical vapor deposition and an outer deposited by physical vapor deposition over the inner layer.

Coating for improved wear resistance

A nanolayered coated cutting tool that includes a substrate that has a surface with a coating on the surface thereof. The coating comprises a plurality of coating sets of alternating nanolayers of titanium nitride and titanium aluminum nitride wherein each coating set has a thickness up to about 100 nanometers. The coating includes a bonding region and an outer region. The bonding region comprises a plurality of the coating sets wherein the thickness of each coating set increases as the set moves away from the surface of the substrate. The outer region comprises a plurality of the coating sets wherein the thickness of each coating set is about equal.

Nanolayered coated cutting tool and method for making the same

A tool which includes a substrate which has a first surface and a second surface wherein the first surface ad the second surface intersect to form an edge. A adhesion coating scheme is on the substrate. The adhesion coating scheme comprises an innermost layer which contains titanium, and is on the surface of the substrate. The adhesion coating scheme includes an outermost adhesion layer. A wear coating scheme is on the adhesion coating scheme. The wear coating scheme includes one or more wear coating sequences wherein each wear coating sequence comprises an inner layer including aluminum and nitrogen and an outer layer including boron and nitrogen.

Diamond coated cutting tools and method of manufacture

A process for making a coated body comprising the steps of: providing a substrate comprising tungsten, carbide and cobalt, and the substrate having at least one surface with eta phase thereon; subjecting the substrate with eta phase on the surface thereof to a conversion treatment at a temperature between about 1250&deg; C. and about 2000&deg; C. under at least a partial vacuum for a duration sufficient as to convert at least a portion of the eta phase to fibrous tungsten carbide grains that the fibrous tungsten carbide grains are at the surface whereby the substrate surface presents a surface roughness, R , of greater than 12 microinches; and applying a coating to the surface of the substrate.

A process for making a diamond-coated tool and the tool made thereby. The process includes a sintering step. In that step, the tool substrate is sintered in an atmosphere and for a time and at a temperature so that superficial, exaggerated grain growth is promoted that imparts a surface roughness which may serve as anchoring sites during a subsequent diamond coating step which is performed by a vapor deposition technique. The diamond-coated tool prepared by the process includes a large grain substrate surface, and an high bond strength between the diamond coating and the substrate surface.

A coating scheme comprising a boron and nitrogen containing layer that satisfactorily adheres to a substrate is disclosed. The satisfactorily adherent coating scheme comprises a base layer, a first intermediate layer, a second intermediate layer and the boron and nitrogen containing layer. The coating scheme is compatible with tooling for drilling, turning, milling, and/or forming hard, difficult to cut materials. The coating scheme has been applied to cutting inserts comprised of cermets or ceramics using PVD techniques. The boron and nitrogen layer preferably comprises boron nitride and, more preferably, cubic boron nitride.
