A method and an apparatus for recognizing a Multicast and Broadcast Service (MBS) region in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. In the method, whether a next MBS MAP message transmission point of a first frame and an MBS data burst transmission point indicated by MBS burst assignment information of a second frame match with each other in a third frame is determined. When matching with each other in the third frame, a control message including information for determining a starting point of an MBS region is generated. The generated control message is transmitted during one of the first and second frames.

Method and apparatus for recognizing multicast and broadcast service region in broadband wireless communication system

A method and an apparatus are configured to support a plurality of Media Access Control (MAC) versions in a broadband wireless communication system. An operating method of a terminal to support the multiple MAC versions in the broadband wireless communication system includes receiving a message comprising information of one or more MAC versions supported by a base station, from the base station; and sending information of one or more MAC versions supported by the terminal, to the base station using a message. Thus, in the wireless environment where the multiple MAC versions are mixed, the MAC version can be matched.

Method and apparatus for supporting multiple MAC versions in broadband wireless communication system

An apparatus and method for operating an idle mode in a wireless communication system. The method includes transmitting, by a Mobile Station (MS) to a Base Station (BS), a RaNGing REQuest (RNG-REQ) message for changing a paging cycle while operating the idle mode; transmitting, by the BS to the MS, a RaNGing ReSPonse (RNG-RSP) message including paging information to be changed; and operating a new idle mode by the MS and the BS according to the paging information transmitted and received while operating the idle mode.

Apparatus and method for operating an idle mode in a wireless communication system

A method quickly resuming a downlink service in a hard handover in a cellular mobile communication system. To provide the fast downlink service to an MS during a hard handover from an OBS to an NBS, the NBS receives handover user information from the OBS, and generates an MS temporary ID using the handover user information to identify the MS. If user data is generated for the MS before a connection is established for traffic transmission between the MS and the NBS, the NBS transmits the user data to the MS on an HCCH using the MS temporary ID.

Method of providing a fast downlink service in a hard handover in a cellular communication system

Provided is a system and method for performing a ranging process in a communication system. If a Subscriber Station (SS) detects the insufficiency of UpLink (UL) resources for transmission of a Ranging Request (RNG_REQ) message during the ranging process, it transmits a UL resource allocation request message requesting additional allocation of the UL resources to a Base Station (BS) for additional transmission of the RNG_REQ message to cause the BS to additionally allocate the UL resources for the additional transmission of the RNG_REQ message.

System and method for performing ranging process in a communication system

A method of controlling automatic retransmission request (ARQ)-related timers in a broadband wireless access communication system is disclosed, by which reliability of a wireless link can be increased and the ARQ-related timers can be properly operated even in a handover situation. A mobile subscriber station temporarily stops an operation of the ARQ-related timers by informing a base station of a handover start when a handover situation occurs and restarts the stopped ARQ-related timers when the handover situation is finished.

Method, apparatus and system for controlling ARQ-related timers in broadband wireless access communication system

An HARQ method for guaranteeing a QoS in a wireless communication system is provided. In a transmitting apparatus using a HARQ for transmitting packet data in a wireless communication system, a retransmission controller determines the size of redundancy information for correcting transmission errors in packet data, and a transmitter transmits the redundancy information of the determined size upon request for a retransmission of the packet data. Transmission of redundancy information of a variable size at each retransmission satisfies the QoS required for each user, maximizes a data throughput, and allows for the efficient reception of an ACK or a NACK for the redundancy information.
