Needle interventions are widely used in the field of oncology for taking biopsies of tissue in order to inspect whether tissue is cancerous or not. To make these interventions more reliable feedback of what kind of tissue is in front of the needle is required. A way to achieve this is by making use of optical spectroscopy. This requires integration of fibers into the needle. These fibers are used to deliver light to illuminate the tissue in front of the needle and to collect back the reflected light from the tissue. The present invention proposes to integrate the fiber distal ends in the slanted bevel of the needle in such a way that at least one source-detector fiber pair has a distance that is larger than the outer diameter of the needle.

An interventional instrument, system and method include an elongated flexible member () having one or more segmented sections () disposed longitudinally. An optical fiber () is disposed internally in the flexible member. A plurality of optical sensors () are coupled to the optical fiber and distributed along a length of the flexible member such that the optical sensors are positioned to monitor parameters simultaneously at different positions or at different data sources along the flexible member to provide distributed sensing.

Optical sensing-enabled interventional instruments for rapid distributed measurements of biophysical parameters

A system and method for mapping interluminal structures includes an elongated flexible instrument (). An optical shape sensing device () is disposed within the flexible instrument and is configured to determine a shape of the flexible instrument relative to a reference. The shape sensing device is configured to collect information based on its configuration to map an interluminal structure during a procedure. An imaging enabled ablation device () is mounted at or near a distal end portion of the flexible instrument.

Mapping system and method for medical procedures

A system and method are provided for tracking a functional part of an instrument during an interventional procedure and displaying dynamic imaging corresponding to a functional part of the instrument. The system comprises: at least one instrument; a system for acquiring anatomical images relevant to guiding the instrument; a tether connected to the imaging system at a fixed end and connected to the instrument at a distal end, the tether comprising at least one longitudinal optical fiber with a plurality of optical shape sensors; an optical console that interrogates the sensors and detects reflected light; and a processor that calculates local curvature at each sensor location to determine the three-dimensional shape of the tether and determines the location and orientation of the instrument relative to the images using the local curvatures of the tether and the location of the fixed end of the tether.

Flexible tether with integrated sensors for dynamic instrument tracking

The present invention relates to an examination apparatus for providing information about an object and a method for providing information about an object of interest. In order to improve the visual reception of information relating to the object, an examination apparatus is provided that comprises an examination arrangement and a control unit with at least a first interface and a second interface. The examination arrangement is adapted to detect object data from at least one region of interest of an object and to provide the object data to the control unit. Further, the control unit is adapted to compute object data into object information and to transform at least a part of the object information into image data (). Further, the control unit is arranged to extract pre-determined indicative data from the object information and to transform the indicative data into graphical advisory data (). The first interface is configured such to provide the image data to a display unit () in order to display the image data () to the user. The second interface is configured such to provide a signal for an ambient advice display arrangement in order to provide the graphical advisory data () to the user.

Examination apparatus

Needles are widely used in interventional radiology. Each medical application requires a specific needle type. The same holds for the photonic needles which analysis depends on the type of application the clinician aims for. Therefore, it is relevant to have the X-ray machine recognize the type of needle that is being used and to load the required software for the tissue analysis. It is therefore proposed to have a data link established between the imaging modality used for the acquisition of the patient anatomy (X-ray, CT, MR or US) and the system that processes optical data from the needle, so that the information from this imaging modality can be used to guide the processing. In a preferred embodiment the selection is made by reading out the code present in the disposable needle when it is connected to the console.

Algorithm for photonic needle console

A system for generating an image including information of both an interior and an exterior of a patient. The system includes an X ray device for providing an X ray image of a patient's interior, and a camera responsive to a wavelength for providing a camera image of a patient's exterior. The camera may be supported by the X ray device for establishing a determined spatial relationship between the camera and the X ray device. The system further includes a spatial reference for spatially correlating the X ray image and the camera image, where the spatial reference is detectable in the X ray image and in the camera image. A data processor configured for rendering the camera image and the X ray image into a composite image on the basis of the spatial reference.
