Systems and methods relating to performing individual transmit and/or receive measurements for each antenna element in an antenna array implemented on an Substrate Integrated Antenna Array (SIAA) are disclosed. In some embodiments, an SIAA comprises a substrate, one or more antenna elements at a surface of the substrate, and an electrically conductive via fence having a first side electrically coupled to ground within the substrate and a second side at the surface of the substrate, the electrically conductive via fence separately circumscribing each antenna element of the one or more antenna elements within the substrate. The SIAA enables the use of a respective test structure to perform per-antenna element measurements.

A method and system for prioritized baseband processing in a wireless communication network is disclosed. Parameters affecting processing times for performing tasks associated with different user equipments are evaluated and the tasks are prioritized based on the evaluation. Each task is performed by the baseband processor at a time that is based on the priority assigned to the task.

Method and system for wireless communication baseband processing

Systems and methods for determining a location of a wireless device are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of operation of a central processing node for a shared cell of a cellular communications network includes obtaining signal strength measurements for a signal received from a wireless device at multiple Reception/Transmission (R/T) points in the shared cell. The signal strength measurements are simultaneous signal strength measurements made on signal discrimination space resources in an uplink of the shared cell. Further, the signal discrimination space resources are matched to capabilities of power meters utilized to generate the signal strength measurements. The method further includes identifying one or more of the R/T points having the best signal strength measurements and estimating a location of the wireless device based on known locations of the identified R/T point(s).

Method, apparatuses and system for improved wireless device location in shared cells

A method and devices for integrating a cellular radio network with a WiFi network are disclosed. According to one aspect, a method includes selecting, at a base station having a cellular radio subsystem and a WiFi radio subsystem, at least one of a cellular radio network carrier and a WiFi carrier to carry at least one data flow from the base station to a user equipment. The method further includes transmitting, from the base station to a user equipment, a control signal to cause the user equipment to select at least one of a cellular radio subsystem of the user equipment and a WiFi radio subsystem of the user equipment to receive the selected at least one of the cellular radio network carrier and the WiFi carrier. Data from the at least one data flow is transmitted on the at least one selected carrier.

Aggregation of carriers of a cellular radio network with carriers of an auxiliary network

Presented are methods and apparatus for decoupling transport and control (T&C) functions from a plurality of eNBs and collecting the T&C functions in a centralized entity for managing the T&C functions for a larger pool of eNBs. An enhanced interface and protocol is defined for allowing the new T&C pool entity to communicate with the eNBs over a shared IP based network. The redistributed functionality provides for optimizing both data compression capabilities and security by compressing data earlier in its transmission path and by encrypting data before it is sent to an eNB.

Pooled transport and control functions in a 3GPP LTE network

Systems and methods that provide a virtual macro cell in a heterogeneous cellular communications network are disclosed. In general, micro cells served by multiple micro base stations are aggregated to provide a virtual macro cell. Each micro base station provides service to one or more low mobility user equipments (LMUs) located within the micro cell of the micro base station using one or more first resources (e.g., a first carrier) that are allocated to LMUs. In addition, each micro base station cooperates with the other micro base station(s) in the virtual macro cell to provide service to one or more high mobility user equipments (HMUs) located within the virtual macro cell using one or more second resources (e.g., a second carrier) that are allocated to HMUs. By utilizing the virtual macro cell for HMUs, handover and paging overhead are reduced for the heterogeneous cellular communications network.

Systems and methods are disclosed for autonomously determining overlapping coverage in a cellular communications network. In one embodiment, the cellular communications network is a heterogeneous cellular communications network. In one embodiment, a network node of a cellular communication system obtains information (e.g., pilot reports) indicative of a perceived coverage of one or more covering cells at wireless devices within a measuring cell over a measurement interval. The network node determines overlapping coverage of the measuring cell and the one or more covering cells based on the information indicative of the perceived coverage of the one or more covering cells at the wireless devices.

Autonomous determination of overlapping coverage in heterogeneous networks

A method and system for providing CoMP assistance in a wireless communication network are disclosed. In one embodiment a cooperating base station receives a CoMP assistance request from a serving base station. The CoMP assistance request is a request for assistance to decode a first transmission from a UE. The cooperating base station receives the first transmission from the UE. The first transmission from the UE is received at the cooperating base station at one of a time before receiving the CoMP assistance request and a time after receiving the CoMP assistance request. The cooperating base station determines a CoMP payload in response to the CoMP assistance request. The CoMP payload is based on the received first transmission from the UE. The CoMP payload is forwarded to the serving base station after the serving base station determines that the first transmission from the UE is received by the serving base station with error.

Distributed buffer store based uplink coordinated multipoint communications

The base stations in a coordinating set, i.e., CoMP set, implement distributed V-MIMO processing to decode uplink signals transmitted from multiple user terminals over the same time and frequency resources. Each base station uses the extrinsic information received from its coordinating base stations to facilitate demodulation and decoding. In the event that one of the base stations successfully decodes an uplink signal, it may provide the decoded data to the other coordinating base stations in the coordinating set. In this case, the coordinating base stations do not need to decode the uplink signal. Even if the uplink signal is not successfully decoded, the demodulated data received from the coordinating base station increases the likelihood of successfully decoding uplink signal in the next iteration of a HARQ process.

Distributed V-MIMO processing for coordinated multipoint reception

A method for integrating functions of a cellular radio controller and a microwave backhaul radio controller are disclosed. In some embodiments a cellular baseband unit is coupled to a cellular radio unit and a microwave backhaul radio unit. The cellular baseband unit includes a digital signal processor that performs modulation, demodulation and scheduling for both the cellular radio signals and the microwave backhaul radio signals.
