A method is provided for replacing an existing service pipe carrying fluid to an outlet within a property with a replacement service pipe. In the method the outlet is disconnected within the property from the existing service pipe in such a way that both during and after disconnection fluid is prevented from escaping into the property. A desired length of replacement service pipe is then fed into the existing service pipe in such a way that during and after the feeding step fluid is prevented from escaping into the property. The outlet is then connected to the outlet end of the replacement pipe 2 in such a way that during the connection fluid is prevented from escaping into the property and after the connection step fluid is allowed to pass to the outlet solely by way of the replacement pipe.

A method is provided for replacing a length of a branch gas main 1 joined to a spine main 2 with a length of replacement main 7 having an outer diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the branch main. In the method access is gained to the bore of the branch main and one end of the replacement main 7 is fed along the branch main 1 via the access point and towards the spine main 2 until the branch main 1 has been replaced. During and after the feeding step gas is prevented from entering any clearance 20 between the mains 1 and 7 by means of a head 9 attached to the leading end of the main 7. After the feeding step a sealant 25 is injected into the branch main 1 to form a seal within the clearance 20.

Joints and leaks in pipelines or mains are sealed by injecting into the joint or leak a sealant by means of an expandible tubular pig which is moved endwise through the pipeline or main. The sealant is in the form of an anaerobically curable monomer which cures in the relatively air free conditions in the joint or leak. The pig forms within the pipeline or main an air-free space which communicates with the joint or leak and which is isolated from the fluid in the main. Nevertheless the pig is hollow to permit the flow of fluid therethrough while the joint or leak is sealed. The sealant is injected into the joint or leak by way of the space so that the sealant cures in situ in the joint or leak.
