An optical filter comprising a first lens, and first and second optical elements. The first lens has an optical axis, configured to focus beams propagating parallel to the optical axis at a focal point. The first optical element has a first semi-reflective surface, the first semi-reflective surface being curved and having a first radius of curvature around a first centre of curvature on the optical axis. The second optical element has a second semi-reflective surface. The first radius of curvature is between 1 and 10,000 times the distance between the first semi reflective surface and the focal point along the optical axis. The first and second semi-reflective surfaces are arranged to form a resonator. The first lens and the first and second semi-reflective surfaces are arranged along the optical axis such that light is transmittable along an optical path through the lens and the resonator. The optical filter further comprises one or more expansion elements located outside of the optical path, and arranged such that expansion of the expansion elements causes relative movement of the first and second semi-reflective surfaces.

Combined frequency and mode filter

An optical assembly includes an optical cavity; an output detector; a reference detector; and a plate beam splitter, wherein the plate beam splitter has a first face and a second face, and is configured to form, from an input beam: a first output beam, that passes through the optical cavity and impinges the output detector, a first reference beam that impinges on the reference detector, a second output beam parallel to the first output beam, and a second reference beam parallel to the first reference beam; one of the first output beam or the first reference beam is a reflection of the input beam in the first face of the plate beam splitter; the output detector is configured to exclude at least a portion of the second output beam; and the reference detector is configured to exclude at least a portion of the second reference beam.

A bidirectional optical device includes a first optical component, wherein a portion of a first interface of the first optical component has a reflector coating, wherein a second interface of the first optical component has an optical coating, and wherein the first optical component includes an internal splitting interface disposed between the first interface and the second interface, and a second optical component including a reflector aligned to the second interface of the first optical component, wherein the first optical component and the second optical component comprise an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer.

Bidirectional filter

There is described an interferometer for use in an optical locker. The interferometer comprises at least two transparent materials having different thermal path length sensitivities. The interferometer is configured such that an input beam is split by the interferometer into first and second intermediate beams, which recombine to form an output beam, the first and second intermediate beams travelling along respective first and second intermediate beam paths which do not overlap. At least one of the intermediate beam paths passes through at least two of the transparent materials. A length of each intermediate beam path which passes through each transparent material is selected such that an optical path difference between the first and second intermediate beam path is substantially independent of temperature.

Interferometry assembly having optical paths through different materials

Apparatus for monitoring the output of an optical system. The apparatus comprises first and second fibre optic sections, a reflective coating, and a detector. The first fibre optic section has a first cladding and a first core, and is configured to receive light from the optical system at one end and has at the other end a first angled, polished face. The second fibre optic section has a second cladding and a second core, and has at one end a second angled, polished face. The first and second fibre optic sections are arranged such that the first and second angled, polished faces are substantially parallel and adjacent and the first and second cores are substantially aligned. The reflective coating is applied to the first or second angled, polished face, and is configured to reflect a portion of light transmitted through the first core. The detector is arranged to receive the reflected light.

Apparatus for monitoring the output of an optical system

In some implementations, an optical assembly comprises an optical cavity; one or more detectors; and an optical component having an input face and an output face configured to receive an input beam to the input face and to produce one or more primary output beams, and a plurality of secondary output beams from the output face, the secondary output beams resulting from multiple internal reflections within the optical component. At least one of the input face is not perpendicular to the input beam or the output face is not perpendicular to the one or more primary output beams. Each primary output beam is transmitted through the optical cavity perpendicular to at least one surface of the optical cavity, and directed to a respective one of the one or more detectors. Each detector is arranged to exclude at least a portion of each secondary output beam.

An optical locker may include an assembly. The assembly may include a beam splitter, configured to split an input beam into at least three beams; an etalon having at least three regions, positioned so that each beam passes through a different region; a detector configured to measure output intensities, Tn, of the etalon for the beam; and a controller configured to determine a ratio, Ta/Tb, of the output intensities, wherein that ratio has a slope at the output intensities which is above a threshold, obtain a target frequency of the input beam, and determine an actual frequency of the input beam based on the target frequency and the ratio of the output intensities.

According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an optical filter. The optical filter comprises first and second optical elements, and one or more expansion elements. The first and second optical elements are arranged along a common axis, each terminates in a flat surface perpendicular to the axis. The flat surfaces are separated by a gap having a width d, such that the flat surfaces form a Fabry-Perot etalon and light is transmittable along an optical path through the elements and the etalon. The one or more expansion elements are connected to the optical elements, located outside the optical path and extend parallel to the axis with a length greater than the width of the gap. The expansion elements comprise a material having a linear thermal coefficient of expansion different to that of the optical elements such that a difference in expansion of the expansion elements and the optical elements causes relative movement of the flat surfaces along the axis resulting in a change in the width of the gap.

An integrated optics block () for use in a coherent optical transmitter comprising: a beam splitter () configured to split an input light signal into first and second input light signals, to output the first input light signal for use in an optical transmitter chip and to output the second input light signal for use as a local oscillator signal; a polarization combiner () configured to combine first and second received modulated light signals to form an output; and a polarization rotator () configured to rotate the polarization of the second modulated light signal such that it is substantially orthogonal to the polarization of the first modulated light signal prior to combining.

Optical component

The invention relates to a beam combiner for a Raman pump unit. The beam combiner is configured to receive and propagate at least two orthogonally polarized collimated light beams. The beam combiner comprises a birefringent prism and an optically isotropic prism. Each of the prisms is located in the path of the beams and configured so that the beams are substantially parallel to each other when they emanate from the beam combiner.
