A method and system configures an antenna system to enhance communication signal quality within a wireless communication device. An antenna system controller determines a usage state of the wireless communication device based on received sensor data. In addition, the antenna system controller determines whether the usage state matches a pre-identified reference usage state. If the usage state matches a reference usage state, the antenna system controller configures the antenna system using configuration data mapped to the reference usage state. In addition, the antenna system controller tracks occurrences of usage states to generate usage state statistics and uses the generated usage state statistics to predict a timing of future usage states within the wireless communication device. The antenna system controller configures the wireless communication device for the predicted usage state when an associated trigger event is detected. Additionally, the antenna system controller configures the antenna system based on signal quality feedback.

A capacitive micro-electromechanical switch (MEMS) integrated circuit (IC) comprises a plurality of capacitors, each having a voltage terminal for applying an actuation voltage to the individual capacitor, wherein each capacitor is capable of being individually cycled. The MEMS IC further includes: a high voltage driver having a voltage distribution mechanism that couples to the voltage terminal of each of the plurality of capacitors to enable the high voltage driver to selectively provide a pre-determined voltage input required to actuate and charge a selected one or more of the plurality of capacitors; and control logic communicatively coupled to the high voltage driver and which deterministically applies power cycle times (less than a stiction limit) for an actuation and de-actuation of at least a first capacitor of the plurality of capacitors to substantially reduce an occurrence of stiction within at least the first capacitor during operation of the MEMS device.

An antenna system for reception and transmission of radio frequency (RF) signals and a method for tuning the antenna system are provided. The antenna system includes a ground plane, a first element and a second element. The first element includes a driven unbalanced antenna element that resonates within at least one predetermined first frequency band to transmit and receive radio frequency (RF) signals modulated at one or more frequencies within the at least one predetermined first frequency band. The second element is non-resonating within the at least one predetermined first frequency band and is located within an antenna volume of the first element to create a partial loop response within the antenna volume of the first element by capacitively coupling to the first element when connected to the ground plane.

A method and device for providing impedance tuning to compensate for capacitive loading effects on an antenna which are associated with conductive or physical components in close proximity to the antenna is provided. A dynamic impedance tuning (DIT) controller periodically receives information that indicates that one or more functions of a physical component and/or a particular device operating state are currently active. In response to one or more functions of the physical component being activated, the DIT controller configures the tunable impedance to a pre-set impedance level to compensate for capacitive loading effects on the antenna. In addition, the controller triggers a switch to connect the tunable impedance to the ground signal line to provide antenna tuning corresponding to the preset impedance level. The tunable impedance adjusts the terminal impedance of the ground signal line to minimize capacitive loading effects associated with the signal line.

A hand-held communication device, such as a cellular telephone or a personal digital assistant (PDA), comprises a sensor assembly and an auxiliary input interface. The auxiliary input interface is situated along one or more exterior surfaces of the device and is electrically coupled to processing circuitry within the device. The sensor assembly is removably attached to the one or more exterior surfaces of device and provides signals at the multiple outputs in response to tactile inputs from the user. In one embodiment, an assignment procedure assigns tactile inputs from the user to predefined functions of the device and/or one or more software applications installed in the device. During subsequent operation of the device, each of the specific tactile input executes one or more predefined functions.

Embodiments include systems and methods for controlling radiation of radio frequency (RF) energy by a wireless communication device that includes a transmitter, an antenna, a vector field sensor, and a processing system. The transmitter produces an analog RF signal, and the antenna radiates the analog RF signal into an environment. The vector field sensor senses an intensity of a vector field resulting from the analog RF signal radiated by at least the antenna (and possibly other portions of the device). The processing system determines whether a value representing the intensity is greater than a first threshold, and when the value is greater than the first threshold, the processing system causes the radiated RF energy produced by the wireless communication device to be decreased.

Sensor assembly () is preferably realized by a combination that includes an elastomeric connector () and a top portion having a flexible shroud () and multiple conductive strips () that are configured for contacting conductive regions () of elastomeric connector ().
