A projection system for use with a polarized projection screen having a screen polarization direction. The projection system includes a projector operable to generate a polarized light output and project the polarized light output along a beam path towards the polarized projection screen. The polarized light output includes at least a first light component having a first polarization direction and a second light component having a second polarization direction orthogonal to the first polarization direction. The projection system also includes a waveplate received in the beam path. The waveplate is structured to rotate at least one of the first light component and the second light component such that the first light component and the second light component have a common polarization direction to be aligned with the screen polarization direction to minimize absorption loss of the polarized light output.

Polarized projection system and method

A display illumination module for the illumination of a rear-projection screen is provided in which a first array of light sources is positioned adjacent to a first face of an optical modulating array layer for modulating the transmission of light emitted by the first array light sources. The first array light sources emit light within a defined angular range, and the optical modulating array layer is positioned relative to the first array of light sources so that light from adjacent light sources does not overlap at the optical modulating array layer. A second array of light sources is positioned adjacent to a second side of the optical modulation array layer and is arranged such that light from the second array of light sources does not pass through said optical modulation array layer and said second array of light sources does not substantially block light from the first array of light sources passing through the optical modulating array layer. One or more display modules may be incorporated into a display system that includes a rear projection screen that is spatially offset from the optical modulating array layer so that light emitted from adjacent light sources in either the first or the second array of light sources overlaps on the screen.

High performance seamless light emitting diode illuminated display

A method for growing semiconductor wafers by lateral diffusion liquid phase epitaxy is described. Also provided are a refractory device for practicing the disclosed method and semiconductor wafers prepared by the disclosed method and device. The disclosed method and device allow for significant cost and material waste savings over current semiconductor production technologies.

A thin layer substrate has a plurality of micron sized electrically conductive whisker components which are arranged in parallel and extending from one surface of the substrate to another surface to provide electrically conductive paths through the substrate. Such a substrate may be usable for micron sized LEDs.

Light emitting diodes and substrates

The present invention provides a tiled optical fiber display device structure which includes a light emitting diode (LED) backlit liquid crystal display (LCD). Light from the LCD enters an array of optical fibers that directs the light to a viewing screen. The optical fibers eliminate the use of energy absorbing color filters in conventional LCD's, and also enable the seamless tiling of multiple display modules.

The present invention provides a multiplexed matrix alternating current electroluminescent display, comprising an array of matrix addressed capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixels, with each capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixel including an electroluminescent pixel and a circuit element connected in electrical series with the electroluminescent pixel. The circuit element is switchable between an electrically insulating capacitive state and an electrically conducting state depending upon a voltage applied across the capacitively switchable electroluminescent pixel. The matrix multiplexed electroluminescent (EL) display with the low capacitance switching device in electrical series with the electroluminescent pixels reduces column displacement currents, thereby reducing power consumption. Refresh times can also be reduced so that the size and resolution of passive matrix electroluminescent displays can be increased.

Capacitively switched matrixed EL display

Electroluminescent laminates having a thin film electroluminescent oxide phosphor layer on insulating substrates. Thin film EL laminates are produced using high dielectric constant layers, such as SrTiO and BaTiO next to the oxide phosphor layer on one or both sides of the oxide layer, primarily as stable charge injection, and trapping interface layers, and to increase the electric field in the phosphor. Electric breakdown protection through self-healing has been provided by traditional low K dielectrics in combination with an appropriate choice of adjacent electrode. The high dielectric constant materials employed also provide for a high capacitance layer, thereby increasing the electric field in the phosphor and increasing the charge transfer into the phosphor during emission. These thin film EL laminates demonstrate steep brightness-voltage behavior and have been prepared using green and red electroluminescent oxide phosphors.
