This invention relates to a process for extracting nonpolar constituents from natural substances such as hops with simultaneous separation of residues of nonpolar plant protectives (fungicides/insecticides). In a first step, the plant protective as well as other ingredients that are soluble under the chosen conditions is extracted with compressed gases, and in a subsequent stage, the dissolved mixture is passed through an adsorbent and the plant protective is selectively removed from the mixture.

Process for the extraction of nonpolar constituents from plant material

By the extraction with CO.sub.2 at 60 to 150 bar and 20.degree. to 70.degree. C., an aroma enriched fraction is taken from the moistened black tea, said fraction being added again to already decaffeinated and dried tea. Decaffeination starts after the aroma fraction has been obtained by pumping carbon dioxide at a pressure of between 150 to 500 bar and a temperature of between 10.degree. to 100.degree. C. through a bulk moistened tea. The solvent charged with caffeine is passed over an adsorber or purified by reduction of density.

There is provided a novel procedure for the extraction of a high proportion of the potential bitterness resins from hops by extracting the hops with super critical carbon dioxide at pressures of about 100 to 300 bar temperatures above 100.degree. C.
