Mobile station aggregation of acknowledgments and negative acknowledgments in wireless networks

Various example embodiments are disclosed herein. According to one example embodiment, a method may include determining, at a base station in a wireless network, an uplink channel quality for a mobile station, sending an acknowledgment/negative acknowledgment (ACK/NAK) aggregation indicator to the mobile station based on the determining, sending a plurality of data bursts to the mobile station, and receiving at least one aggregated ACK/NAK report from the mobile station.

Various embodiments are disclosed, which may include transmitting a transmission schedule for a data burst to a plurality of relay stations in a wireless relay network. The transmission schedule may identify a data channel for transmission of the data burst and a corresponding shared negative acknowledgment feedback channel for transmission of a negative acknowledgment. The negative acknowledgment feedback channel may be shared by the plurality of relay stations.

Various example embodiments are disclosed. According to one example, a method may include permuting, by a superordinate station in a wireless network, physical resource units to logical resource units, the physical resource units of sequential logical resource units being noncontiguous. The method may also include sending at least one allocation message allocating a block of sequential logical resource units to each of a plurality of mobile stations, each of the allocated blocks being contiguous with at least one other allocated block. The method may also include de-allocating at least a first block of sequential logical resource units from a first mobile station selected from the plurality of mobile stations and a second block of sequential logical resource units from a second mobile station selected from the plurality of mobile stations, the first block of sequential logical resource units being noncontiguous with the second block of logical resource units. The method may also include sending at least one re-allocation message allocating the first block of sequential logical resource units and at least a portion of the second block of logical resource units to a new mobile station.

Methods and apparatus for synchronizing frames in wireless networks are disclosed. An example method includes delaying, at a wireless relay station, a start time of a frame. In the example method, the start time of the frame is delayed, such that the relay station receives one or more data symbols from a superordinate wireless station and one or more data symbols from a subordinate wireless station at substantially the same time during the frame.

According to one general aspect, a method may include acquiring a message. In some embodiments, the method may also include determining if a relay station (RS) is allowed to manipulate portions of the message. In some embodiments, the method may also include, if so, generating a message authentication code (MsgAC) based upon a MsgAC key (MsgACK) known to the RS. In some embodiments, the method may also include combining the message with the MsgAC. In some embodiments, the method may also include wirelessly transmitting the combined message to the RS.

An apparatus comprising a controller configured to pack a plurality of Service Data Units (SDUs) from a plurality of connections associated with a Mobile Station (MS) into a single Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol Data Unit (PDU). In various embodiments, the controller may be further configured to generate a Generic MAC Header (GMH) that indicates that a plurality of Service Data Units (SDUs) from a plurality of connections associated with a Mobile Station (MS) have been packed into the MAC PDU. In some embodiments, the controller may be further configured to generate, for each SDU, an associated Extended Packing Sub-Header (EPSH). The apparatus further comprising a memory configured to store MAC PDU. The apparatus also comprising a wireless transceiver configured to transmit the MAC PDU.

Medium access control protocol data unit overhead improvements

According to one general aspect, a method comprising establishing a connection with at least one mobile station (MS). The method further comprising, in one embodiment, allocating communication resources, in resource blocks, to the MS. In various embodiments, the method also comprising selecting a size of a burst length field based in part upon a bandwidth and a number of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols used to communicate with the MS. In another example embodiment, the method also comprising selecting a size of a burst length field based in part upon a bandwidth and scheduling time duration (which can be based upon sub-frame, multiple sub-frame or frame duration) used to communicate with the MS. In one embodiment, the method may also include transmitting, to the MS, a message that includes the burst length field. In some embodiments, the burst length field may indicate to the MS the number of resource blocks allocated to the MS for purposes of communication.

According to an example embodiment, a method may include transmitting a Media Access Control Protocol Data Unit (MAC PDU) via a wireless link to one or more mobile stations, the MAC PDU including a plurality of MAC management messages as a pay load, at least some of the MAC management messages directed to different mobile stations, the KIAC PDU including a MAC header having a connection ID field identifying a connection for all (or at least one, or a plurality) of the MAC management messages included in the MAC PDU.

Multi-user packing techniques for wireless network

Various example embodiments are disclosed herein. According to one example embodiment, a method may include obtaining a first channel quality measurement for a wireless node such as a mobile station or relay station in a wireless network. The method may further include sending, from the wireless node, a full channel quality indicator (CQI) to a base station based on the first channel quality measurement. The method may further include obtaining a second channel quality measurement for the wireless node. The method may further include sending a differential CQI to the base station based on comparing the second channel quality measurement to the first channel quality measurement. The differential CQI may occupy less channel resources than the full CQI.

Differential channel quality reporting

A prospective relay station sends a report indicative of radio resource sets/preamble sequences used by its neighbors. Where the reported radio resource sets comprise less than all available radio resource sets, a radio resource set that is not indicated in the report is assigned; else where the reported radio resource sets comprise all available radio resource sets, a resource set indicated in the report is assigned. A message is sent to the prospective relay station indicates the assigned radio resource set and an identifier for use as an enabled relay station. The message may include signal strength and IDs. Apparatus, methods and computer programs are detailed for both a base station and the relay node. Radio resource set re-assignment, managed mode relay operations (where the base station schedules traffic among relays using the same radio resource set), and power control of relays and associated mobile stations are also described.
