Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for computer aided design of physical structures using techniques that facilitate manufacturing, include: modifying a three dimensional shape, for which a corresponding physical structure is to be created using a manufacturing process, to produce a modified three dimensional shape; and providing the modified shape of the modeled object for use in manufacturing the physical structure using one or more computer-controlled manufacturing systems that employ the manufacturing process. The modifications can include, for each of two or more discrete layers of the three dimensional shape along a direction associated with the manufacturing process, extracting a two dimensional profile representation of the three dimensional shape in a current discrete layer, offsetting the two dimensional profile representation by an amount associated with the manufacturing process, and changing a next discrete layer using an offset two dimensional profile representation of the current discrete layer.

Computer aided design with geometry filtering to facilitate manufacturing

A method includes: obtaining a design space and design criteria for a modeled object including a design constraint on an acceptable likelihood of failure, wherein a statistical model that relates a structural performance metric to specific likelihoods of failure for material(s) is used to translate between the acceptable likelihood of failure and a value for the structural performance metric; iteratively modifying a generatively designed shape of the modeled object in the design space in accordance with the design criteria including the design constraint to stay under the acceptable likelihood of failure for the physical structure, wherein the numerical simulation includes computing the structural performance metric, which is evaluated against the design constraint; and providing the generatively designed shape of the modeled object for use in manufacturing a physical structure.

Generative design shape optimization based on a target part reliability for computer aided design and manufacturing

A method includes obtaining one or more load cases and one or more design criteria for a modeled object, the one or more design criteria comprising a build material strength model indicating strength relationships between thickness of an object feature and build angle for that object feature resulting from additive manufacturing; iteratively modifying a three dimensional shape of the modeled object in accordance with the one or more design criteria and the one or more load cases, including applying the strength relationships between the thickness of the object feature and the build angle for that object feature on a per-element basis during numerical simulation of the modeled object; and providing the three dimensional shape of the modeled object for use in manufacturing a physical structure.

A method includes performing numerical simulation of a modeled object in accordance with a current version of the three dimensional shape and the one or more in-use load cases; finding a maximized stress or strain element, for each in-use load cases; determining an expected number of loading cycles for each of the one or more in-use load cases for the physical structure using the maximized stress or strain element and data relating fatigue strength to loading cycles; redefining a fatigue safety factor inequality constraint for the modeled object; computing shape change velocities for an implicit surface in a level-set representation of the three dimensional shape in accordance with at least the fatigue safety factor inequality constraint; and updating the level-set representation using the shape change velocities.

Generative design shape optimization with damage prevention over loading cycles for computer aided design and manufacturing

In one aspect, a method includes specifying a continuous data format representation for a first property of an object and a discretized data format representation for a second property of the object, wherein the first property and the second property are different from each other; producing a 3D model of the object within a 3D space using the continuous and discretized data format representations, which overlap with each other in all three dimensions in at least a portion of the 3D space; and using at least one common access method into the 3D model of the object to obtain data from both the continuous and discretized data format representations, within the portion of the 3D space, to manufacture the object using one or more manufacturing processes.

In one aspect, a system includes one or more computer storage media having instructions stored thereon; and one or more data processing apparatus configured to execute the instructions to perform operations including (i) receiving input specifying different material properties of an object to be manufactured, (ii) generating from the input a three dimensional (3D) model of the object using overlapping volume representations of the different material properties of the object, wherein the overlapping volume representations employ different data formats and different resolutions, and (iii) storing the 3D model of the object for use in manufacturing the object.
